“Great Food and lovely service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Came here from Dundee for a birthday night out meal, what can I say, we will certainly return. The staff were very helpful and cheerful. The food was delicious. The atmosphere of the place was very homely and you were made to feel very welcome. In fact we are really thinking about booking up for a christmas meal (before christmas) as the menu looks very inviting. No complaints from our party of nine. Excellent.

We stayed here for one night en route to a family wedding. First impressions weren't too encouraging. There is no reception desk, just one very pleasant young woman manning the counter of the tearoom/ restaurant who showed us to our room. The decor is very dated - probably last done in the 1980s - but the room was fairly OK insofar as it had a bed, a big cupboard and a TV plus the usual tea/coffee facilities. I never did manage to lock the bedroom door, which would worry most folk - particularly since there didn't seem to be any resident staff staying in the building overnight.
We had lunch - burgers - which were good, but took about 30 minutes to arrive. Breakfast next morning was fine, and was prepared and served by the owner's mother. The young owner who had apparently promised to leave out our bill with his Mum, hadn't - so there was a bit of hanging about and telephoning before our bill was ready.
I really liked the two family members I met (I'm guessing the young woman may have been Stephen's wife or sister), and I really hope they make a go of it. But this place needs many thousands of pounds spent on it to turn it back into the warm and welcoming historic coaching inn it must once have been. The decor is appalling in the restaurant and bar. This is a historic building, so why on earth have mid-20th century flooring, wallpaper, lighting, furniture and 'art' on the walls? Warm and cosy is the look they should be after - with a real fire burning in the winter and real ale on tap in the bar. Does the family have the capital required to make the transformation? I really hope they do.

Room Tip: Make sure your door lock works!

Nice hotel; the rooms are furnished nicely and the breakfast was very good.We also had dinner here and the food was good. I would have rated it a bit higher if the hotel had been cheaper - I think it is a bit overpriced.

Last minute booking, so only managed to get last room available (Family room), but no complaint. The room was clean, well furnished and the bed comfortable. The staff were all cheerful and very helpful on arrival and this continued through the whole visit. We stayed for 3 nights and ate in the restaurant two nights, there was a good choice and the food was excellent. The choices at breakfast second to none.
Lovely village with welcoming locals. If the service stay this way they will see us on many more occasions.

Hotel itself is lovely and looks a good place to stay. Friendly staff. Went for evening meal. Poor seafood soup which was essentially campbell's cream of chicken soup with bits of mackerel and lumps of potato. Main courses almost inedible. Macaroni Cheese was watery, tasteless and lacking cheese. Accompanied by incinerated garlic bread and insipid salad, all too hot to eat for 10 minutes. 'Quality' sausages were average supermarket variety alongside very lumpy, hard and incredibly salty 'mashed' potatoes and burnt Yorkshire pudding. A huge disappointment and definitely won't eat here again.

We popped with the intention of just having a coffee and a scone. However, when we saw what was on offer on the menu (and the reasonable prices) we decided to have a full meal. We were not disappointed.

The restaurant was about half full but we were served promptly and cheerfully by a very pleasant lady. My wife had the roast beef salad and treated myself to bangers and mash. Both meals were delicious. Add a glass of wine and a pint and a half of lager and we had change out of £25.

No complaints and would recommend it to anyone. We'll go back there.

Spent one night in The Covenanter after attending the performance of Richard 111 in the grounds of Falkland Palace. It proved to be a lovely little hotel. The bedroom was very clean and nicely furnished. The decor throughout the hotel was tastefully modern yet suited the old building. Very pleasant staff in the bar and an excellent cooked breakfast!

Room Tip: Stayed in the Bruce room - it had a view across the main road to the local church.
