This is an amazing experience, not to be missed. Because of the sailing times, we are able to do it as a day trip from Edinburgh. As the sailing times change on a day to day basis, this might not always be the case. I called a couple of days before to reserve places on the boat and paid for my tickets on arrival at the harbour. The kiosk is well signposted and easy to find.
Other reviewers have described the trip well. I'd just like to add some of my personal highlights: the view of hundreds of puffins flying overhead like moths and actually hearing their little wings flap as they passed; the tern chicks, just the loveliest wee things, standing on the cliffs and hearing the seals singing on the beach.
As a previous reviewer mentioned, it is more of a fair weather activity as it's almost completely out of doors. Visitors should also go prepared with food and drink. There are hot drinks and some snacks on the boat (wonderful Bakewell Tarts) but when I was there, there was no water on the island.
