“great scottish hotel”

Craws Nest Hotel

Apr 8, 2008

in a last minute decision to go away for the weekend - we decided to visit anstruther - part of scotland we hadnt seen much of. I looked up the special offer link on the symphony hotel website - and subsequently phoned up the hotel to ask if the offer was available - and it was!

due to the dinner dance that was on - myself and my boyfriend could only get a twin room in the annex the first night then on the sunday night they gave us a lovely double room in the hotel with a gorgeous view. The second room was slightly more dated but we liked it anyway!

The annex room was lovely - the place was spotless, the staff were so friendly and easy to talk to.

Dinner was included in the deal - and we were given a 17 pound allocation per person per night for food - which was more than adequate! We thought the food was absolutely gorgeous and so fresh.

We definately thought it was amazing value for money - anstruther is a must to visit - and the only place i would stay is the craws nest - such a great scottish hotel!

Yes it is dated and lots of old photos about - but we as a young couple still had fun and met some really nice people there - def planning a trip back!

We used to live in Fife and this hotel had a good reputation for many years . Sadly it is now stuck in a timewarp . Our room was basic and the bathroom as mention already was so dated. For our evening meal we were seated on the pathway the waitresses used to go to the kitchen so our table rattled as each one passed. I am sure the menu has not changed in 20 years with nothing light or modern. They should have been serving all the local produce like fresh strawberries but I am sure the vegetables were frozen. Service was slow the first night but that was a treat compared to our second night. They had a Rotary meal on the go and we waited 45 minutes between courses .The fish should have been wonderful as it comes from the local area , or should do . However it was disappointing . I had booked and paid for bed breakfast and evening meal . When I went to pay our bill for wine I found £60 worth of food was charged. When I queried this the receptionist showed me a card which stated the allowance for dinner was £21 . ''Did you not get one of these cards ? '' she asked. I told her that I had not and nobody mentioned there was a limit to what we could have. There was no argument about scrubbing the charge so at least we had steaks , coffee etc. that we did not pay for. Despite this it was not worth the money and I had booked through Late Rooms and not paid the full price. Beware also that a lot of locals with their families still fill up the dining room at weekends. They seem to appreciate the mounds of chips etc. I will never go back

“Over priced and mediocre”

This hotel has been in Anstruther for many years. Originally it was a
family run establishment but is now one of a chain of 3 hotels in the
Symphony Leisure group. The exterior of the hotel looks smart and inviting, unfortunately the public areas inside do not live up to the
outer appearance. The reception, dining room and bar are all very tired and dated looking. This hotel has the feel of a place that really needs a bit of money spent on it and a bit of TLC. We did not eat a lunch or evening meal in the hotel so I can't comment on the food apart from saying that the breakfast was average, neither particularly good nor particularly bad. The same can be said of the rooms. They are clean and the ones facing the back of the hotel have good sea views but again the decor could be freshened up and the furnishings renewed. Our bathroom was a Dynasty style 80s nightmare (complete with plastic marble effect walls!) and the bed seemed as though it had seen better days (perhaps back in '82 when the Queen visited that place!).Mediocre is how I would describe this place and that would be fine if they were not charging such top end prices. The
last thing I would say is to make sure if you do end up here that you
take cool clothing (even in winter). The whole hotel is heated like a sauna and there seems to be no way to turn off the bedroom radiators.

“Only hotel in town, and it knows it”

Craws Nest Hotel

Sep 30, 2007

In many ways this is the type of hotel that gives Scottish tourism a bad name. Rooms cost the same as 5 star places in most other parts of Europe but, while the place looks fairly grand from the outside, it looks and feels like a slightly down-at-heel golf clubhouse once you're in.

In fairness, the rooms are clean, the service is generally OK and the food is not bad. It's just that at the prices they charge (£130 B&B) you'd expect a lot more. So it becomes more obvious that the soundproofing is minimal, the beds soft to the point of worn out and the showers sound like food processors. Also when we were there the building and all the rooms wereheated to a ridiculous extent, presumably for the many elderly people who seem to love it there. We had keep the window open all night which is very unusual in Scotland at the end of September!

It is the only hotel in town, though, so if you want to stay in Anstruther and don't like B&B's, you'll have no choice but to go here. Some competition would probably do the place good.

Lastly, the Queen visited this place in 1982 and there's no chance you'll forget it - her picture hangs on practically every wall!

Stayed for three nights at The Craws Nest. Very helpful and pleasant staff and excellent food at all times! Wonderful breakfasts!! On the downside we had to take our luggage up 40 stairs (no porter).. The decor is 'tired' and the bar lacked atmosphere could have done with some music. On arrival we were directed to the 'Eddie Clarke' annex to a small, dull room overlooking the carpark we declined that room as it was 100% disappointment. Still we would use the hotel again because of the quality of the food, staff and it was spotless.
