Having lived nearby for 23 years , we thought we would stay at The Craws Nest when we came back to visit Fife with my 93 years old father . What a disappointment ! Our two adjoining rooms were microscopic , and werent big enough to seat the 3 of us if we wanted to keep him company after dinner . We thought wed sit in the residents lounge on Saturday night to watch the t.v , unfortunately the t,v hadnt been tuned in when it had replaced another broken one left in the room ,and on reporting this I was told that the Maintainance man wouldnt be available to tune it in until the following Monday. So that was that ! The bath in our bathroom had black mould round the overflow , which I wiped off . Finally , I had to ask a waitress if she could find someone to carry my large heavy suitcase to my room on the first floor , which she did . Surely the lady on Reception at check,in could have seen I needed help with this and my elderly fathers case ! All in all a disappointing stay

Room Tip: Try other hotels nearby , felt Craws Nest was trading on past glory

Stayed here with our elderly parents in May 2012. We had heard great things about the place and the restaurant so that is why we took our parents. I am not sure what we were expecting but we were very disappointed. The two rooms we had were very tiny and very warm (it was a bit cool when we were there, a heatwave started the day we left) and you could hear a mouse fart in the next room to you. We slept very little as we were treated to stereophonic snoring in the rooms either side of us and the people in one of the rooms were up very early. The room had a view of the Firth of Forth but also looked over houses below. We had a great view of underwear hanging on the washing line below our room. The bathroom was one of the darkest I've ever seen in an hotel room. The room itself was clean and there was lots of hot water. We ate in the hotel restaurant which we told was very good. Our opinion was that it was very average, nothing to rave about. Overall the hotel could do with some renovation in all areas. I would travel the extra distance to St. Andrews and stay there before I would stay at the Craw's Nest again. Our parents were also disappointed.

Dear GDSAH,

Thank you for your recent review on trip advisor regarding your stay at the Craws Nest.

It is never pleasing to here that a customer is disappointed with there stay. As you can appreciate - the hotel is a very old building and there is nothing we can do about the walls without it meaning a total renovation.

I am glad to hear that you found the facilities clean and comfortable and that you enjoyed your meal in the restaurant.

Kind Regards

If you enjoy the meeting of countryside and seaside, then Fife's a good place to start. Across the Forth Bridge (so not too far from Edinburgh) the south-facing coast of Fife looks back across the Firth from a string of coastal villages, steeped in tradition and sporting fascinating harbours. There are lots of hostelries, many catering for the golfing fraternity, drawn by the other attraction of Fife. Whether you play golf, or watch it, or don't have a clue, there's a warm welcome ofor you hereabouts. We stayed for three nights at Anstruther, with it's busy harbour and its THREE highly prized Fish & Chip Shops on the seafront. The Craw's Nest Hotel (part of the Symphony group) is locate just off the main road, about two blocks back from the seafront, but many of the rooms have a seaview, over the rooftops. Th hotel was adequate for our stay, with spacious public areas of lounges and dining room (food 3Star) and very pleasant garden areas and terraces for outdoor dining. The rooms are a bit of a drawback, being rather small and with rather "thin" walls between adjoining bedrooms. We were allocated a room with a splendid view over a rather grotty flat roof and damaged enamel on the bath (No.24). When we complained we were quickly given keys to look at two more rooms and quickly moved to No.18 which had a seaview and a good bath ! Everywhere was clean and cared for and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Service at meals was generally good with just one rather disappointing dinner out of three, when the service lapsed and we waited for long spells between courses. You can book B&B or half board for a very reasonable supplement. Sooner, rather than later this hotel needs to renovate the bedrooms, possibly reducing the number to increase the size. Lots of nearby villages to visit and very close to St Andrews for a special day out. Don't be put off, and don't be afraid to ask. You'll probaly enjoy the over-all experience as we did.

Room Tip: All rooms on first floor - no lifts. Insist on seaview

We picked this hotel for its proximity to Pittenweem and for the parking (directly in front of the hotel, walled off from the main road), despite reading poor reviews of it. Our room was small but adequately furnished (except for a very small TV!) with compimentary tea and coffee in a wardrobe, out of the way. Double bed was comfortable. Rooms are badly sound-proofed, especially in the bathroom where you could hear the entire conversation from next door. However, we had a sea view which was excellent and we slept well with no disturbance, even though our room was at the hallway door. The bathroom had dark brown wet wall making it very dark indeed with yellow (!) suite - unusual.
I had fish n chips in the restaurant which was excellent and to be recommended and the breakfast choice was good - we took the kippers.

Room Tip: Ask for room with seaview.

Dear Canisp10,

Thank you for your recent review on trip advisor. The fish and chips you enjoyed in the restaurant is one of our best selling dishes and we firmly believe that starting off your day with a good breakfast is a great way to finish your stay at our hotel. The kippers are very popular as well as the smoked haddock (which are all locally produced).

We hope to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

Stayed overnight recently with friends while visiting the Pittenweem Art Festival. As we booked late we were surprised to find 2 rooms left as the art festival weekend is extremely busy. 1 room however was in the main building and 1 in the annexe. We took the annexe and found it to be OK. It was clean and for just 1 night, adequate. It had twin beds which were very hard and a bit uncomfortable, but that is just my personal taste. The bathroom was again adequate with the shower in the bath but the pressure was a bit low and took a little while to adjust to get the best result which was not great. There were tea and coffee facilities which were fine.

One thing which did annoy me was that after we had gone to bed and just fallen asleep, residents in another room came in and were very noisy to say the least. I think though that it was as much to do with the poor sound proofing as the level of noise from our neighbours. After that we finally got some sleep.

In the morning we went to the dining room which was quite large and despite there being a lot of guests, it was only half set out which spoilt the ambience slightly. However the staff were very diligent and the choice of food was very extensive and very enjoyable.

Overall I felt that for a one night stay it was all right, I would not want to stay for any more than 2 nights at most. The decor was a bit dated in areas and sometimes the staff tended to disappear. We and a few other guests were left on our own in the lounge and had to wait for service for some time.

I think that the problem areas could be sorted out and guests would enjoy their stay a lot more.
Would I go back? Perhaps not.

Stayed here for one night on 31st July.
We were visiting the Art Festival in Pittenweem and wanted somewhere close by with parking.
Having read a few reviews I was unsure what to expect. We had a nice twin room in the annex with a lovely view of the sea and Anstruther. The shower room was adequate, if a little dark, and the beds were comfortable. Quiet, peaceful and private.
We had dinner which was good, in spite of several mishaps, but I think there was a staff shortage.
Breakfast was very good, a huge choice of cereals, juice, pastries, teas, jams and a good choice of cooked breakfast too.
Rooms were clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: Choose the annex if you want a quiet room and ask for a sea view
