“Outdoors and Indoors Eaglescairnie Mains Has is All”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2010

I stayed for a couple of nights mid term break with my 10 year old and his friend. We all had a great time-partly because of the marvellous location and accommodation -but also because of the friendly hospitality of the owners.
Barbara made us feel very much at home and encouraged the boys to run about and explore (indoors and out). Although the house is beautiful it is very much a family home on a working farm and Barbara's relaxed style meant I could relax too.
Her husband took the boys on a tour of the farm which they absolutely loved. Barbara is one of lifes enthusiasts and has lots of local knowledge about places to eat and attractions. East Lothian is absolutely lovley with beautiful towns and villages and a fabulous coastline. I would urge you to go and see for yourself!

My boyfriend and I spent two nights in this beautiful rural cottage in Gifford during our trip in Edinburgh. We ended up there because during the last week end of the Festival in August we couldn't find a place to sleep in the city. It was an unexpected opportunity to visit the countryside and spend one relaxing day at the seaside.
The cottage is a big house sorrounded by fields and forest. It has a beautiful and a bright conservatory where a rich breakfast is served in the morning. you can have both cooked and continental breakfast and you can help yourself with cereals and toasts with jam, honey, marmelade, peanut butter, chocolate spread,... Beeing in a country full of fruit-bearing plants, I would have expected more homemade jams and fresh fruit too.
Barbara and are very nice persons, we had a brief introduction when we arrived but we didn't have much time to know them because they went to London for a wedding and they left the guests alone: in the morning there was a lady who prepared breakfast but during the day the house was without landlords.
We guests were all surprised by the fact they had been so trustfull and it was embarassing too knowing to be alone during the night in the middle of nowhere.
The other thing we didn't fancy was the fact that the room was not done the second day.
If you want to explore the region I recommend this place as long as you can have a car (there are not other means of transportation to get there).

This a fantastic place to be if you love nature. The views are beautiful all around and you can go for walks wherever you like. The rooms are well furnished and cleanliness is top. Both Michael and Barbara are fantastic hosts and will try to accomodate in any way possible. The house is just 45 minutes from the city of Edinburgh.Breakfast is great and as Michael said ,they use only local produce so everything is fresh.Michael is also always willing to show you around and explain the farming practices and conservation on which he is very keen. Many thanks for the nice stay Barbara and Michael

We stayed at Eaglescairnie Mains for two nights having come up for a wedding. Michael and Barbara couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. It is a beautiful house situated in a lovely part of Scotland. A farm surrounded by other farms it is just the place to stay for a peaceful time. Edinburgh is about 40 minutes away by car. The rooms were well decorated and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Michael has won awards for his conservation work and it is well worth seeing. He will happily talk about it..
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would reccomend it without hesitation.

We loved our stay at Eaglescairnie. The farmhouse is located a few miles east of Edinburgh, and you definitely need a car to get there. The owners provide a number of alternatives for getting back to Edinburgh, the best being a cheap and easy park and ride system. The house is surrounded by fields with wheat and sheep, all of which are accessible and have marked walks around them. These walks link into the public path system, which allows you to easily walk to quaint nearby villages. The hosts are very friendly and are eager to engage in conversation, they also cook a great breakfast! Definitely highly recommended.

My wife and I stayed at the Eaglescairnie Mains for five days in October 2006, visiting friends in East Lothian. We very much enjoyed our stay. The hotel is a bit off the beaten path but is easy to find if you follow the directions. The guest house has a lovely, cozy and friendly feel, with a large sitting room downstairs with TV. Our room upstairs was comfortable and spacious, with a great view of the farm and fields. The innkeepers, Michael and Barbara Williams, are very friendly and accomodating. Breakfasts are cooked to order and served in a lovely conservatory with a communal table and lots of windows - a very relaxing way to get your day started. (Try the locally produced honey.) Eaglescairnie Mains is a working farm, and has won numerous honors for its work in conservation and creative land use - we found it very interesting to chat with Michael about this work (for which he was awarded an MBE, although he doesn't make a show of it!) The location was perfect for us. East Lothian is a beautiful part of Scotland, with tons of lovely little towns. If you golf, there are at least eight courses within a 10 minute drive. Getting into Edinburgh is easy via the A1 - better than driving all the way in is to take the 15 minute drive to the park and ride station at Newcraighall, then a short train ride which drops you right at Waverly Station in the heart of town. All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing stay and we would definitely stay here again.

I found this farmhouse on the internet and was extremely impressed by the location, cleanliness and friendliness of the owners. The farmhouse is a working farmhouse with excellent accommodation and the cleanliness is outstanding. The rooms were extremely comfortable and it was a change not to have a television in the room.

The surrounding gardens and countryside means a very relaxing time was spent.
