This was a highly enjoyable trip, with lots to interest the whole family. We have three boys, aged nearly 2, 4 and 7 and each of them had lots of fun, which meant that their parents also had a good experience.
The attraction is quite small and does not have any pretensions; but you will find plenty to occupy a good 3 hours (longer if you stop for tea/picnic)
The castle is very atmospheric and gives you a good sense of the defences that were established in that part of the world under the reign of Henry VIII. The history is covered in sufficient detail through information boards and an audio guide to interest adult visitors, but is also displayed simply enough to interest younger visitors.
There are some excellent dressing up costumes for children to try on and a fun (and suitably noisy) interactive display about loading a gun, which sends an impressive bang reverberating throughout the castle. The children are further amused by some historical games within the castle and also in the garden outside.
All in all this was an excellent trip. It was a shame there were only about 3 other families there when we visited, but it did mean we had the run of the place. This trip went a long way to making up for the disappointment of the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester that had wasted our morning.
