4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2011

My husband and I have just spent 2 very pleasant nights at this hotel. It has recently been taken over by the new owners and they are trying very hard to make improvements. Yes there are some issues with the rooms(we had room 4) what do you expect with such an old building but all is in hand. We didnt feel the need to compile a negitive list All staff were very pleasant and made you feel welcome. There was wifi connection in the breakfast room. It is very central with N.T Corfe Castle within easy walking distance, complete with their shop. The number 40 bus takes you into Swanage (free if over 60 ) and the number 50 bus the other way into Poole. Make the most of this hotel and enjoy what Dorset has to offer. The food was of a very high standard, the chief excellent Thanks

Room Tip: Room 1 (front) has shower only and not a modern TV room 4 has bath, flat screen TV and DVD (new curt...

Great choice of beers, food a bit disappointing for the price and there were far too many flies in the bar for a pub/restaurant....

My wife and I have just had a wonderful 4 night stay on B&B with evening meal. Good accommodation, friendly and helpful staff and excellent food. We will certainly be returning, and will certainly be recommending the hotel to our friends.

Just spent 2 nights at this hotel. The room very lovely, 4 poster and en suite. Tea making facility and bottled water included. Breakfast was excellent as was the evening meals. My wife is a coeliac and the head chef came out to us 3 times to confirm that the sauces were OK for her, he even made up one especially. The quality of the food was excellent. The staff very friendly. Yes there is some road noise but that didnt bother us. Would HIGHLY recommend. Go for the diner bed and breackfast option. Great value

Could not agree less with those who gave this pub hotel a bad review. Stayed there for two nights Oct 14 & 15 with another couple, and could not fault the hotel in any way. Our friends, who had booked the Bankes, were worried after later reading the reviews, but they needn't have. We had the two front-facing 4 poster bedrooms. They were clean, the bathroom was fine (except had to pump the loo handle), good shower and bath, flatscreen tv (our friends' TV wasn't flat screen) with 4 terrestrial channels (certainly enough when you should be out and about anyway). Dinner and breakfast were fine, nice ambience and the staff friendly and attentive. Rooms were double-glazed, although there was some traffic noise (what do you expect on the main intersection in the town square...) I believe someone also complained there was no wi-fi. Well, it's not the hotel's fault - mobile reception in the centre of Corfe Castle is erratic to say the least, so you have to move around somewhat (inside and out) looking for a signal. No hesitation in recommending The Bankes Arms, and the location slap bang in the town square couldn't be better. And before anyone says the word "suspicious", we have no connection whatsoever with the management of the hotel...

Room Tip: Good town square views from the front 4-poster bedrooms.

We had a very different experience to the earlier reviewer and ate really good food at this hotel on several evenings during our stay. Compared to the other pubs in the village, this one served really good food and the beer (Ringwood) was kept really well.

Staying in Worth Matravers on holiday. Had a great meal in the Greyhound opposite and thought we would try the pub opposite. I had steak and chips and hubby the seafood platter. Both plates were piled high and it became clear it was quantity over quality. The chef appeared and wished us well eating our meal (he was very friendly). Steak was good but a overload of greasy chips, onion rings, salad wilted under greasy food. Hubbys sea food plate was shocking. The calamari was burnt and the rest just cheap crab/few prawns that were clearly not fresh. Chef came back smiling (worrying) and was delighted most of my food had gone. I has a Jack Russell Terrier helping me out under the table.
I am suprised this chef is cooking to this standard, Im sure he is capable of more. Less is more, the Scottarms at Kingston are a good example. (and the Greyhound of course)
