We ate in a group of four. The welcome was warm with several lounges and a bar for pre and post dinner drinks. Service was exceptionally good and all courses of the dinner were excellent. Prices were remarkably reasonable for such excellent cuisine. The dining room is rather too brightly lit for our taste, and the presence of two large, loud parties slightly took the edge off the evening.

Every visit to the Castleman is a treat. We have stayed a few times, and eaten in the restaurant several times. The food and service is consistently excellent, with staff very friendly and helpful. You'd normally associate this with expensive pretentious places, but the Castleman is very welcoming and has a relaxed atmosphere, with prices very reasonable. Every time we book and mention to friends we are going to the Castleman, the answer is always the same : "Can we come?"

Room Tip: Room 8 I think, with the four poster is perfect, a very large room overlooking the gardens and beyon...

If you are looking for a trendy restaurant with "celeb" chef connections then the Castleman isn't for you. However, if you are looking for superb food, wonderful service and a lovely setting, then the Castleman is the proverbial pot of gold. This beautiful old former dower house is home to an outstanding restaurant with a small number of B&B rooms. Ponder the fresh, seasonal menu in the cosy bar, or the slightly faded elegance of the drawing room (squashy sofas perfect for collapsing into for a post-dinner coffee with home made chocolate truffles), or the stunning carved wood pannelling of the former smoking room. This is possibly the only place we have ever eaten where making your selection from the menu is so hard - almost everything catches the eye and there is an emphasis on local, seasonal produce. The staff are unfailingly welcoming and friendly and make each visit a delight. Considering the quality of the food and service, prices are excellent value for money. We have been coming here for years for special occasions and just when we fancy a treat. The slightly faded elegance just adds to the charm and I wouldn't hesitate to to recommend it.

The Castleman is, quite simply, unique. In a country where you either have to suffer the tartan-slippers B&B or the "you don't look like our sort of customer" hotel, the Castleman falls perfectly between the two. It has a wonderful atmosphere, relaxed and homely, yet offers the kind of food and service you'd expect from a 5-star hotel. The rooms are huge and airy, with lovely touches such as Victorian baths (proper power showers as well, however!) and what in our room could only be described as a commode - more like a throne, really! The building is an eclectic mix of architectural styles, including some wonderful carved woodwork rescued from a London house a couple of centuries ago. Everything about the Castleman is relaxing, and we would imagine it's particularly nice in the winter when the fires are lit in the lounge. Chettle is a really quiet location, perfectly placed for walkers and cyclists, and you can walkor bike for miles without seeing another soul or vehicle. All in all, a real find.

Room Tip: No point - all the rooms are worth staying in!

We ate here on an arranged lunch for our car club and had an excellent lunch for over 30 people. The food was excellent, as was the service - would highly recommend for the food!

We had dinner, B&B here to celebrate my husband's birthday, having read a review by An Inspector Calls in the Mail.
We consider the Castleman a real find and will definitely return. It is somewhat shabby and has seen better days but charm and class ooze out of the place and you can forgive a few tatty edges as part of its overall character. Our huge room had a 4-poster bed and a super bathroom, all overlooking the lovely grounds and neighbouring fields.
Dinner was sumptious, beautifully presented and delicious, as was breakfast the following morning.
The great thing is that this hotel is affordable, which is why we will certainly return for any excuse!

Room Tip: Worth upgrading to superior rooms
