We chose the Hensleigh for it's proximity to the beach and cliffs. My son was interested in fossils at the time and it seemed a good spot to base ourselves. We booked over the telephone and were pleased that all was smoothly handled by the attentive staff.
We had been placed in a downstairs, on suite room with a double and also a child's bed. The room was comfortable, clean and of a reasonable standard, if a little 'tired'. Drinks making and biscuits were a bonus and much enjoyed by our 6 yr old. Whilst there is no activities for children, the staff were always tolerant and flexible, and our son enjoyed the stay as much as we did.
The breakfast was of a good standard, table service being the norm, so don't expect a 'help yourself' buffet. We dined in the hotel on two evenings and the food was lovely, no complaints at all. The hotel bar is very small and has a limited selection of beers available, but not a real problem if your not too picky, and the wine list is perfectly adequate.
The situation is great for families, a short walk down to the beach and the cliffs or a pleasant drive to Lyme Regis or any of the many other resorts in the area.
The only minor drawback was the lack of evening entertainment in Charmouth, not really much to do after dinner, other than go for a walk or watch TV in the room. It wasn't a real problem for us, as our son was usually ready for bed around 9.00pm anyway, but if you wanted more in the way of 'Nightlife', Lyme Regis would probably be a better bet. But then you would probably not come to the area in the first place. More a 'quiet holiday' destination I would say or a place for large, family groups, happy to make their own entertainment.
The Hensleigh was a little overpriced we thought when compared to chain hotels, but in July, in this area, it is around average for family run establishments. Let's face it, if they didn't make a reasonable profit, they wouldn't be there. Then we wouldn't be able to enjoy such beautiful places in the way we do.
