“Lovely Weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago NEW

Annual weekend away with friends. Stayed for 2 nights B&B. Very warm welcome. Room was basic, no TV but it did have tea and coffee making facilities and comfortable bed. The bar area was excellent, sofas, tables and chair and lovely log fire. Lovely atmosphere. Breakfast was in the conservatory area and very good, and we stayed for dinner two nights and both meals were excellent. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Great location for walking, meandering around the village at the craft shops and close to West Bay and Weymouth. We would definitely recommend and hope to go again.

I was looking for somewhere to go for my 30th for a group of about 25 of us (some staying in-house) and was massively impressed by The Ilchester Arms Hotel.
They had an excellent range of wine, beer and cider and managed to deliver a 1st class meal for our whole group.
The decor and service are absolutely flawless - had a fantastic time and definitely planning to go back in the New Year.

We stayed for a weekend at the end of November - the Christmas decorations were up, there was a Christmas fair on the Saturday in the hotel and we were blessed with great weather for local walking. Firstly, beautiful location for hotel/pub - this corner of Dorset is right on the edge of the South Downs, quiet, unspoiled and quiet in the winter months for exploring. A family run business, Staff were lovely, friendly and local . We had a dog friendly room in the courtyard, which although needing a refurb was very clean and comfortable. If you want the big chain, identical room, smooth clean lines to all features, food and service hotel experience, then you will disappointed. This is a village pub/hotel with an individual personality; quirky with lots of theatrical/film memorabilia; made to order breakfasts; lots of walkers at lunchtime for hearty soups and sandwiches; enjoyable 'rustic' food (we ate in both days, which is rare when we are away) but above all a very relaxed venue for a weekend stay. Dogs were welcome and able to stay in rooms for meals or join owners in the pub. I could be picky, but as we really enjoyed our visit that's not what these reviews are about for the average reader looking for a venue to stay/eat. Would we go back ? In a twinkle!

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms, whilst not yet refurbished, perfect for dog owners. Rooms in the main building to...

We stayed one night in the Ilchester Arms . I must say that we were comfortable, and Sally the receptionist, come "girl Friday" couldn`t do enough for us.
But the food! was a let down. The owners are trying their best, but are not focused enough on doing good basic food. My wife asked for boiled eggs for breakfast and received two raw eggs!!
We were offered replacements but were so put off by the first eggs that we didn`t want a replacement.

Room Tip: Some rooms I believe have been refurbished. We stayed in Poppy which has not been refurbished, has n...

After a good bracing walk we settled into a cosy seat by the fire in this wonderful welcoming pub recommended to us by a local shopkeeper! Ordered best boar burger and fish and chips, both utterly fresh and delicious. Friendly service and when we asked for cider we were invited to taste and choose from a huge selection of local brews. What more do you need!? This is the place for lunch!

Stayed one night, and opted for an unmodernised room as much cheaper. We did think it was very disappointing, and not worth £80. Only one bedside light, and that too dim to read by, basin in room, feeble shower with one of those curtains that wraps itself around you. Loud pattern on curtains, and different loud pattern on bed cover. Laminated list of info. with weird spellings, such as smoking prohibitated. No TV or radio, and manager told us most people love the idea of 'getting away from it all'. In that case why have a huge TV on very loudly in the bar?
Dinner was good, a quite sophisticated wine list, and interesting, but not cheap, selection of food, but then very casual service. Our prebooked table wasn't reserved for us, young waiter asking if he 'could grab anything for you guys'. I just felt they are not sure what sort of clientele they are after.
The breakfast was really excellent. However, some confusion as we were presented with a menu with different prices, and were really not sure if we would be charged extra for juice or cereal. I heard other guests wondering the same thing.
Would I eat there again - yes. Would I stay again - probably not.

An ideal spot for a mini getaway! We booked two nights and wished we'd booked for longer. The room was great, the food and service was amazing and the location was perfect. I'd highly recommend this as a place to stay. We will definitely return!
