After camping nearby and having a meal in the hotel's Bay Brasserie one evening, we decided to treat ourselves so we packed up the tent and booked ourselves in for 2 nights. We are 2 adults and 2 children - 10 and 13.
We managed to secure a family 'suite' with a double bedroom, tiny slither of a bathroom inbetween and then a very small box room containing bunks the other side, so ideal to get us all in and with the major benefit of a sea view, but disappointing in size and furniture etc.
The positives: very helpful staff, food and service in the brasserie excellent, fantastic pool and furniture around the pool (if you can get hold of it as other guests tend to hold onto furniture they're not even using!), beautiful grounds, good spa, good breakfast, great play area for the kids, nicely fitted out modern bathroom, good secure storage for surf gear etc., good car park, but above all it has an absolutely spot-on location.
The negatives: very pricey, room was pokey and very basic (shame as the building is so characterful, but the room was so bland with basic cheap lights and a tiny double bed. Room was stiflingly hot, despite having window open so sleep was erratic. Tea/coffee making facilities OK, but not a sweetener to be found anywhere in the hotel (small point, but fundamental to me), service around the pool area was hit and miss....it appeared that once the member of staff had taken one order from someone who managed to grab them at the right time, they disappeared for ages to fulfil the order, without taking any others at the same time. Food in Doyles appeared to be re-heated and the service was not up to scratch....little touches like topping up the wine glasses were missing (again small point, but we would have expected this in such a restaurant)...overall, Doyles was OK.
All of the above negatives are not deal breakers, and despite all that, we would definitely go back again, but would try and book a better room despite the sky high price.
