“Great Pub, Great Ales, Great Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

Once again my friend and I used the facilities at the Portsmouth Arms for our weeks fishing holiday. the accommodation in the adjoining cottages was first class with TV and tea/coffee making facilities in their respective lounges, quiet, and only 6 steps from the bar where real ales were served. Andy sure knows how to look after his Ales
Again the food was exceptional. You will never leave the pub still hungry. Dee sure knows how to keep the customers happy with food. Andy is pretty good at cooking as well.
Looking forward to our next visit in 2014

We wet to the Portsmouth Arms following other reviews on Trip Adviser. Having just moved to the area we were looking for a pub which welcomed people - and we found it here. Andy is a great host and Dee a fabulous cook. Despite, on the evening we first went, all the phone lines were down therefore the card machine was out of order, Andy was not fazed and mderely said to pop in sometime and pay for our delicious meal. Needless to say we went back the next night and stayed for a drink of two ... Andy's birthday!!! We thoroughly recommend this pub - and you'll probably see us propping up the bar!

Big hearty "proper food". The best beer battered cod i have ever tasted. The breakfast looked great and I was assured by a fussy husband when it comes to bacon & sausages that they were very tasty. Really amazing beer battered cod with the lightest and loveliest crisp batter that I have had for many years.

If you want flashy just drive by. If you want really good honest food, a good atmosphere and a friendly welcome then the Portsmouth Arms is a must. Only sorry that hadn't stopped sooner. Will certainly go back very soon to try the curry.

we were looking for a stopover on our way to cornwall and found The Portsmouth Arms via trip advisor and it didn't disappoint. We rang to check it was ok to turn up with 2 caravans 4 adults and 2 children and the all important price and were told FREE only requirement was 'pop in and say hello' Well firstly i will point out for sat nav that the Portsmouth Arms is actually in Portsmouth Arms i mistakenly thought when i reached Umberleigh i was there but carried on driving, thought i had missed it but just past the village sign (Portsmouth Arms) we came across a flock of sheep which gently guided us into The Portsmouth Arms car park!! we were greeted by Andy and a few friendly locals our friends were going to be arriving late (about 10.30 PM) but were assured they would still cook them something if they were hungry. The food was fresh, well cooked and above all tasty and reasonably priced and true to their word when our friends arrived the kitchen was open at 10.30 PM no problem. We had wondered how, during the night we would cope using caravan toilets after a few pints and nowhere to empty but we needn't have worried as Andy kindly left the back door open for us to use the pub toilet (Bar door locked, blast) We asked about breakfast and what time they opened and Dee (Andys wife) asked what time we would like it we felt 9.00AM was a good time and sure enough doors open tables set cereals laid out, orange juice and we were asked what we would like so full english all round plenty of toast white and wholemeal, tea, coffee, all freshly cooked by Dee and it was just what the Doctor ordered in fact it filled us for the rest of the day and the cost ' whatever you think it was worth' said Dee as breakfast is usually included in the B&B rate. Well hope Dee found our payment matched her excellent breakfast. would reccommend this as a stopover point to Cornwall will use again it was a brilliant start to our holiday Thanks Andy and Dee

We were actually stopping at the Northcote Manor opposite but we called in here on our arrival as we were early. Large car park but looked nothing special beside the main road. Inside a well worn country pub style with a welcoming log fire (needed this summer). A vey friendly welcome and we had a Devonshire tea where the scones were 'the best' the bar owners friendly and talking to them we said we were booking in opposite at the Manor. We then learned they had two cottages for rent as well.
They said we were were welcome to have a meal there as they thought we would enjoy.
We ate there twice and the food and cooking is excellent. They use local produce and its cooked perfectly. When you have been out walking and you return tired and just want to relax without any fuss or dressing up and enjoy great food then this is the place to eat and talk to the locals.
Very pleasant.
We cannot comment on staying there but we would think it is very good value.

Ample parking in a stunning setting frames a rustic rural gem. Clean rooms with fresh clean linen ended a perfect day spent visiting friends. Breakfast was first class and cooked to order .stayed for two nights this time but will be staying longer on our next visit.
