My daughter and I had a very bad experience concerning the way we were treated here by the owner’s wife a number of years ago which resulted in us walking out before we had our meal but after we had been served our drinks. We were very upset. At the time my daughter was very vulnerable as she had only recently been widowed. It was her first real outing following the event and it was meant to be a treat.
We therefore did not favour Bickleigh Mill with our custom again for a good many years but eventually decided to give them another chance when we were given one of their gift vouchers for a meal. Since then we have been on a number of occasions and our treatment has always been exemplary.
On the last occasion it was very pleasantly explained to us that they were expecting a large party very shortly after our arrival so it would be appreciated if we could place our orders as soon as possible so that they could be dealt with before the party’s arrival – no doubt not only for our benefit but for theirs as well! When I had difficulty choosing I received kindly guidance from the waiter without feeling pushed or hurried. In all respects the staff could not have been more helpful but at times there was perhaps too much attention with two or three staff coming up to us to take our orders. The gap between courses was spot on.
We were greedy having three courses instead of our usual two when we eat out. Apparently the pavlova is to die for!
One small quibble! This is probably a little unfair as the following comments could well apply to at least 90% of restaurants.
Things are gradually improving for us vegetarians in that nowadays there is almost always one veggie starter and one veggie main wherever I go. Too bad if I do not fancy them!
However, whilst I am a vegetarian by choice, it is best if, whenever possible, I have vegan food. I have problems with dairy if I have any more than the minutest amount at any one time. Bickleigh Mill is excellent in that last time we went I had the choice of four veggie starters and three mains. However even in the best places it is virtually impossible to find vegan dishes. Chefs seem to assume that vegetarian meals need to contain copious amounts of dairy in one form or another. In Bickleigh Mill’s case the veggie meals contain far more dairy than usual. Protein is contained not just in flesh foods and dairy but also in nuts/seeds, beans/lentils and grains. How about your chef blazing the trail and offering at least one vegan starter and main meal?
