“Open Again!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

After many months of staring wistfully out of our bedroom window at a closed pub The Stag finally re-opened last weekend. We went down on the first night and were warmly welcomed upon our arrival. They could not be more apologetic about the current lack of food but reassured us that it would not be long until the kitchens reopened. Proper pub grub will be on the menu soon. So really it's a happy Rackenford again and we hope the relationship between villagers and owners is a long and happy one.

“Welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

Warm welcoming from the family. Very cosy pub that is quircky, which definitely suits the family. Very clean and beautifully designed decor. No food available, but looking forward to Vicki's home made meals!

“Underwhelmed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Hooray, my local has reopened under new management and I was looking forward to a warm welcome as the first Sunday lunchtime customer.

Arrived promptly at 12:00. There was a gentleman and three youngsters behind the bar (I assume the guy was the new landlord but I don't know as there were no introductions). Another lass was sitting at the bar with the obligatory mobile phone, and a chap with 3 young children were at a table by the bar. I assume they were all family.

Warm welcome. The guy behind the bar ignored me and continued with what was obviously an important task, everyone else looked at me but no 'Good morning' or anything was forthcoming. I felt like Burt Reynolds in Deliverence.

The youngsters behind the bar were enthusiastic but lack 'please' and 'thank you' skills.

I get the impression that these guys do not have experience of running country pubs. Will they get there? Maybe? But I won't be there to see it.

We are so sorry that you felt this way on your first visit; you are quite right to point out that the staff are young and inexperienced but the positive is that you say they are enthusiastic - we can build positively on enthusiastic.
Obviously with only re-opening Saturday evening, there were several friends and family that were visiting and I apologise if they made you feel uncomfortable. All I can say is we take your points very seriously and will work to correct them. The staff have all been told that they are not to use their mobile phones during opening hours and to acknowledge each and every customer in a positive and welcoming manner.
We really would like to welcome you again and even buy you a drink if you felt willing to give us another chance as we really believe in this beautiful pub....

“Great hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Happened upon this pub by chance through a board on the main Tiverton to Barnstable road. Looking for lunch on the way to Burrington stopped at the Stag Inn which at first glance looked shut. A very welcoming landlord and a warm log fire on a cold damp day. Only had a snack lunch but the food was very good and service excellent. Great feel to the place.

“If only it was open!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Encouraged by the great reviews online for this establishment, we planned the timing of our trip, and the route we would take to our holiday destination, to enjoy lunch at The Stag. Their own website advertises that the pub is open between 11.00 am and 11.00 pm each day Monday to Saturday. We called on a Monday at about 1.30 pm. No sign of life about. Tried the door. Couldn't get in. Would advise travellers to check with The Stag to be sure they will be open when you intend to call, or like us you may find yourself on the outside looking in, still hungry!
