A lovely clean and modern, yet classic Hotel. The staff are exceptional and go out of their way to be, polite, courteous and most of all make you feel totally important. Our break was over 4 days and then we returned for a 5th night. We had two rooms, one for the kids who had room service and we could conveniently keep a eye on them. We dined and it was just perfect.
I would only request as is the case in a lot of hotels, that the Wi-Fi signal was stronger in the rooms but I know such a thing is a minor.
I would go out of my way to recommend Hartnoll House for both accommodation and their excellent food.

Room Tip: The executive rooms are a dream

We booked into Hartnoll as a stop over on the way down to Newquay. We stayed in the Gate House and had an adjoining room for the kids. The rooms was clean, good size with a lovely modern bathroom. Due to our late arrival we ordered from the menu and had the food delivered to our room. The food was exceptionally good and beautifully presented. In the morning breakfast was again very nicely presented and very tasty. Overall our experience was nothing but positive. Great friendly and helpful staff, lovely food and a really nice comfortable room.

Room Tip: We had an adjoining room in the gatehouse which is slightly away from the main hotel but suited us p...

We stayed here on a Saturday night following a friend's wedding which was taking place nearby.
The positives are:
- Really easy to find, very close to the M5.
- Very pretty surroundings, gorgeous garden.
- Well designed room. Small, yes, but the glass en-suite was very clever as it stopped the room (Room 7) feeling claustrophobic.
- Good service and fairly priced lunch & breakfast.
- The hotel has a very nice "feel" to it, very cosy and welcoming - like staying in a friends' house.

So, so far, so good which is why it was a shame that a few things let the place down. We arrived to check-in at the same time as the bride & groom for a wedding that The Hartnoll were hosting. We were scruffy and had bags so I nipped in whilst my husband was waiting outside - I asked the girl on reception if he could use an alternative door to get into the hotel to avoid crashing through the poor brides receiving line and the receptionist seemed bemused as to why, eventually agreeing to let my husband in through a back door that went through the ladies loos. The same thing happened as we set out to get to our friends' wedding, the hotel bride & groom were having photos taken out the front - again we asked if there was another way out and were told no initially. Now, as guests, this didn't matter to us but I would be pretty annoyed if I was a bride who had hired the hotel for my wedding and scruffy people with bags were allowed to walk through my photographs! I think the hotel ought to consider an alternative entrance/exit when weddings are taking place so normal hotel guests don't get in their way.
Secondly, a couple of niggles about the room - our room was directly above the kitchen where the staff play music and smoke outside until quite late. Irritating. The bath mat was so frayed/torn that I'm really surprised it's still in use and the toiletries were in the big screwed-down bottles which is a real bug-bear of mine in smart hotels. I love little bottles in hotels, which is I know is a personal thing but if the hotel is a good standard, I expect toiletries that I can move around the bathroom!

All in all, it's a sweet little place that offers excellent value for money but still has a few creases that need ironing out.

The room we had was very clean with a modern bathroom and great shower. We ate in the restaurant and although not expensive the quality and presentation was to a superb standard. The staff at the evening meal and breakfast were all very friendly and customer focused. Suggestions rather than issues to how they could improve the experience would be improve the wifi signal in the rooms, have some background music on in the bar at night and it was a surprise to find no air conditioning in a hotel of this quality especially in the conservatory. Small things only mentioned to help them enhance a very good hotel with excellent food and service.

Second time staying at this converted country house hotel, 10 mins from J27/M5. Great location in Exe valley, lovely gardens with mature specimen trees. Lovely evening with old friends - friendly attentive maitre'd gave us choice of table for 6 outside on patio or in conservatory. Good, smiley bar staff and friendly reception. Really very good food and decent wine selection. All of us said we had a good meal. Got a bit cool so were welcomed inside. All in all a great place, well managed with happy staff and a good feel. The owner did the rounds asking if everything was OK - but you wouldn't have guessed she was the Boss. Only one tiny critique - our room was small and en suite was almost in the room!; but we were only 'one nighters' - and this is a converted country house. We have stayed before and had a great room. Great breakfast included in room price. Lovely bed and gorgeous sheets. We'll be back!!

Room Tip: Some rooms are small with en suite in glass cubicle. Some are in outside block. Stay away from busy...

This is a nice place to stay. Staff couldn't have been more helpful, room was very contemporary and well furnished, breakfast was great. Just on a minor point, I stayed on a boiling hot July night ( a rarity in the UK I know) as there is no aircon - it would be a good idea to offer guests a fan - they do this in some of the cheap chain hotels now !

Our stay here was fabulous, the staff were very approachable and very helpful. The room was spotless, modern with all mod cons iron, hairdryer, kettle etc. The food was delicious and service was second to none. The only downside of the stay was it was not long enough, next time I will go for a longer stay.
