“3rd Stay and Still Impressed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Stayed in Cobweb Hall this time and found it very comfortable. The rooms were very pleasant and bathrooms were decorated nicely and immaculately clean. Found everybody very friendly and Bruce went that extra mile to give us everything we needed. We found the other visitors and the locals very friendly - in fact we had the same sense of humour they did.

The exterior of the pub is looking a bit tired but inside it's another world and still as fascinating as the times we have previously visited!

Thanks Bruce & Sally for a great stay!!

Room Tip: The rooms in the pub are bigger than those in Cobweb Hall but if a few of you are staying it's n...

We read about this pub and visited it purposely because of its quirky reputation. Do stop by the check it out and have a beer. The bartender (rather looking like an old pirate) didn't seem to happy to serve anything else but beer. Very interesting pub, with a lot to see.
Only negative experience were some of the locals who, when we entered the bar, directed us to the bar next door where we could find another bar. The other room was empty, which gave us the impression that the locals were not into company from across the pond. So we stayed for one drink and left the place with a dubious feeling.

Thanks for your fair comments. Sorry anout locals welcome. I think you may have come in when 'Woodcutter Dave' was in on Wednesday night. A nice man when you get to know him but he is a bit cheeky. Thank goodness there are 6 other days to the week. I personally like people accross the pond so I am sorry about your negative experience. As for the pirate I married him!! Hope you return and if you do ask for me the landlady Sally.

We passed it just by chance, and it caught my eye. traveled a further 2-3 miles until i could reverse, but it was well worth a visit.
As said in previous reviews, it is truly indescribable and you should visit it to experience it.
Tip - they don't do lunch serviced, except for pies and sandwiches.

I discovered the Highwayman Inn in 1998 whilst walking the long distance coast path (we took a detour).

Buster and Rita were fantastic, eccentric hosts and I returned a number of times over the years.

Sally and Bruce have carried on the family tradition perfectly and we spent the first night of our Honeymoon here in 2004 to escape the Boscastle flooding.

The Inn is fantastical, a fairytale of interesting and unusual things which create an atmosphere that you can lose yourself in for many hours.

Both Sally and Bruce will keep you entertained for hours. Bruce's cooking is great and his breakfasts are legendary.

We made many friends at each visit as we sat around the fireplace chatting into the wee small hours.

Can't wait to return.

This pub is indescribable; externally and especially internally. It is just bizarre - architecturally and in terms of fittings and furniture. It has all these nooks and crannies, little rooms and hidden holes. It has coins and notes forced into crevices in various bits of furniture and the bar (made from wood recovered from a bog). It has a massive set of bellows with legs converted into a table. It has skulls, stuffed animals, lamps, tools and all sorts of ornaments. And lots more. Indescribable - it has to be seen to be believed!
We had a drink in the bar (a pint for me and a Pimm's and lemonade for the Mrs). I took some photos and dropped some coins in the plate for the privilege. We had a chat to Bruce behind the bar and to the couple of couples that came in. One couple were staying in the pub for a few nights and had stayed before, so obviously enjoyed it, They spoke highly of the breakfasts. Frankly, we had intended to come in just for one drink, and found that we were enjoying ourselves so much that we had a second drink.
I'm looking forward to a return visit.

This is our very favourite pub. We have stayed in the cottage over the road as well as downed many a pint over the years.
You simply have to pop in at least once as I can't imagine that there is any other pub like it.
Sally & Bruce have put on some wicked Halloween events. Look out for them and make sure that you dress appropriately.

This is a place you must go. A 12th century Inn with a difference. Sally and Bruce are so wonderful and ready to serve you. The food there is wonderful, cooked by Bruce and drinks by Sally.

There is history in every area and you must allow yourself time to look around at all the nooks and crannies and feel the atmosphere everywhere you go. Well recommended. When we go down to Devon, this is usually our first stop and we feel like part of the family.
