“Yummy cafe on a sunny winters day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013 via mobile

Made a trip specially to Shaldon having read an article about ODE - wasn't disappointed even though they are just running a reduced winter menu on weekdays. It's in a fantastic spot with stunning views out, it has a very chilled and friendly atmosphere and we got chatting to some other visitors too. Food was yummy, special mention for the sticky ginger cake. Added bonus was finding the smugglers tunnel down to Ness Cove Bach where we spent a lovely hour or two collecting sea glass....thoroughly recommend making a special trip to ODE

“Something good for Shaldon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

We have visited cafe Ode twice now, first for tea and cake, the chocolate brownies are awesome and the sticky ginger cake lovely. We went back for breakfast as my other half wanted the eggs Benedict, he wasn't disappointed and enjoyed it. I had the bacon roll with lettuce and chilli jam which was yummy, so good seeing something a bit different to a regular bacon roll. We will be going back.....

“Best cafe ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

I mentioned this in passing in a couple o other reviews ut it is worth its own entry. A wonderful addition to the village. Great food in a casual but very welcoming atmosphere and beautifully prepared. All organic and eco friendly - even down to the cutlery. Drinks are carefully chosen and supplement the food wonderfully. If you are near Shaldon don't miss this for a coffee, snack or meal - my favorite place.

“Ruined by misguided use of throw-away eco cutlery and packaging”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

Food was good, apart from the very small piece of fish in my wife's fish and chips. It was about a quarter of the size that you would expect and it wasn't cheap either.

However, the whole dining experience was ruined by the use of disposable packaging and cutlery rather than normal plates, glasses, knives and forks that get washed up each time. It made it seem like an expensive McDonalds.

The cafe makes a big play on the use of this disposable (albeit bio-degradable) tableware, but I'm certain it only makes sense for takeaways where you would have used some other form of eco hostile packaging. It's completely misleading in the cafe to claim that it is saving tons of landfill rubbish.

The use of the disposable tableware is misguided because:

1) I suspect it is actually worse in eco terms than washing and re-using conventional plates and cutlery. Even the manufacturer, Vegware, on their web site only claims it is better than conventional packaging - "Carbon saved compared with standard packaging". Surely, once you factor in the disposal, recycling, re-manufacture and transportation it can never compete with simple washing up on eco grounds.

2) It's ok for a takeaway, but the Vegware feels cheap and plasticy. It's not suitable for a Cafe charging premium prices.

We live locally and would be back on a regular basis if you drop the Vegware, Otherwise, we'll stay clear.

Many thanks for your review we value our customers feedback. Its fantastic that you have taken time to think about our policies and been able to form an opinion. I would like to reiterate however that we are first and foremost a cafe/takeway - casual quality food - if you feel you want to eat in a more formal environment with stainless steel and porcelin/china we have a great restaurant in the village. At the cafe we presently are able to offer a meal and drink for under £10. Our cutlery is reusable, recyclable and compostable, all packaging when used is composted.
If you purchase traditional fish n chips often it is served in a polystryren container or at best wrapped in plain paper - for a few extra pounds we offer a product cooked by a qualified chef, condiments at no charge, toliets and a view if you decide to eat in
Perhaps you missed the point!
