“Disappointing Stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

We stayed at the Ness Hotel for the weekend. When we booked our room 6 months prior to our stay we thought the rooms were pricey but having looked at the pictures of the rooms on the web site, we thought they looked quite nice, with a free standing bath etc.

After arriving for our weekend, we were very disappointed with our room. The bathroom was very small, bath was tiny, it leaked from the shower and it smelt of damp. The room itself looked very tired and worn. The only good thing about our stay was the lovely breakfast, and the staff were very friendly.

The hotel is tucked away in a corner across the bay opposite Teignmouth. The hotel rooms (I stayed in one of the "Chalet" rooms) are large, mine also having a small kitchen area with fridge. Everything in the room , from bathroom, TV and Fridge etc all worked perfectly well. The bed was very nice and I had a good nights sleep. Yes, as other reviewers say, it is pricey, about 30% too much if Im being honest, but as mine was a business trip I didnt mind that too much (Expenses hey !!) My one slight problem was that when wet, the stairs and outside balcony to get to the room are very slippery. I can see someone having an accident there. Parking is also restriced to just a few spaces, and, as happened to my car, you tend to get blocked in if the resturant is busy. Fortunately, I wasn't going anywhere so it didnt matter to me. There is a public car park about 50 yards away, although how secure that is is debateable.

The resturant for evening meals was very nice, again a little pricey but nice, none the less. The staff are very nice and very helpful (Not just in the resturant but the hotel as well). The breakfast was excellent and very varied.

Overall, certainly better than most hotels but probably too pricey.

Room Tip: If you want space ask for one of the chalet rooms.

The Ness Hotel in Shaldon (Teignmouth) I would recommend with some reservations.
Location absolutely excellent, from the breakfast conservatory and the grounds you overlook Teignmouth harbour and beaches. You are metres from the entrance tunnel to The Ness beach and close to the (recommended) little Shaldon zoo.
We stayed in rooms 10 and 11 (we had to move when we decided to extend our stay as our current room was booked out). Room 10 was slightly larger, better laid out and had more furniture and natural wndows. Both had a partial view of the harbour and peninsula. As mentioned in other reports there are slight stains on some of the carpet and furniture and in the bathroom (in room 10). We didn't consider this to be a problem as it's a daily used hotel room. I considered the rooms to be very clean and well maintained. The layout was a little strange in that both had what appeared to be a kitchen area with a sink, fridge and kettle but no microwave or cooker (not that any were advertised). The rooms if fitted with such would be useful for self catering.
Very quiet at night for sleeping, ideal and again the view.
Other reports have criticisied the staff. We found them all very friendly and helpful at all times from the original booking, through housekeeping, breakfast etc. The breakfasts were good too.
The bar/restaurant was very busy during the evening so it often took quite a while to get served (a lttle understaffed in this area possiblly).
Meals and drinks were of reasonable quality for a good pub chain, however I felt that they were very overpriced, probably by at least 30% when comparing locally. I heard from a resident that locals don't use the place as they think it is overpriced.
We liked the rooms but again felt that they were probably overpriced by at least 30%, but there are offers about like 3 nights for the price of 2, which make them more reasonable.
Parking can be a problem as there are not enough spaces for all the rooms, however there is a paya nd display at £3 per day just across the road.
Overall I would recommend a stay here if you don't mind paying through the nose for the location, but if you can find a deal it is highly recommended as the area is quiet at night and the location is stunning.

Room Tip: Room 3 in the main building believed to be the best. Rooms 10 and 11 in the seperate block at the ba...

After seeing the pictures on the website, I thought I would fork out the 100 odd quid to book this place as a treat. I followed the advice of some other users to book room 3 as that is their best room. As I called up on the phone to arrange a booking, the lady was rude and harshly cut the line off after getting impatient. I tried calling back but she put the phone down on me again.

I did not expect such rudeness from a hotel like this. Avoid at all costs.
