I visited the Smugglers Rest with my wife for an evening meal, we were attracted by the acceptance of dog in the pub, which was nice. Upon entering the pub we found it to be very unpretentious, which was also nice. The drinks were ordered and were served, then the barman, who also subjected us to his choice of 'background' music. I accept that ones musical preferences are always subjective; some tone deaf people do not like what I like and I don't like what they do, but I will tolerate most types if it is played at a reasonable level (i.e. low). I do not share the same musical tastes of the barman, who liked his background music a tad too loud. This reduced the overall pleasantness by a quite a large degree. The kitchen would also benefit from a more effective odour extraction system, the smell of hot cooking oil is not to everyone's taste.
Anyway, onto the food. Being of a vegetarian persuasion, we both ordered scampi and chips. A fairly safe bet in most places and this is no exception, it was OK. The scampi was slightly overdone, but better that way than poisonous. For dessert we had Sticky Toffee Pudding & cream. What can possibly go wrong with that, you ask. You can reheat it quite nicely in a microwave oven, or, you can boil it to death and give it a squirt of aerosol cream. Guess which version we got? It was scaldingly hot and had squirty cream. That was not what we expected in Morthoe.
Overall, the Smugglers Rest was decidedly average. With a bit more effort, it could be so much better. However, a revisit to Morthoe will not provide this establishment with our custom, we will explore other dog friendly venues, if they exist!
