“Decidedly average for pub grub”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2009

I visited the Smugglers Rest with my wife for an evening meal, we were attracted by the acceptance of dog in the pub, which was nice. Upon entering the pub we found it to be very unpretentious, which was also nice. The drinks were ordered and were served, then the barman, who also subjected us to his choice of 'background' music. I accept that ones musical preferences are always subjective; some tone deaf people do not like what I like and I don't like what they do, but I will tolerate most types if it is played at a reasonable level (i.e. low). I do not share the same musical tastes of the barman, who liked his background music a tad too loud. This reduced the overall pleasantness by a quite a large degree. The kitchen would also benefit from a more effective odour extraction system, the smell of hot cooking oil is not to everyone's taste.

Anyway, onto the food. Being of a vegetarian persuasion, we both ordered scampi and chips. A fairly safe bet in most places and this is no exception, it was OK. The scampi was slightly overdone, but better that way than poisonous. For dessert we had Sticky Toffee Pudding & cream. What can possibly go wrong with that, you ask. You can reheat it quite nicely in a microwave oven, or, you can boil it to death and give it a squirt of aerosol cream. Guess which version we got? It was scaldingly hot and had squirty cream. That was not what we expected in Morthoe.

Overall, the Smugglers Rest was decidedly average. With a bit more effort, it could be so much better. However, a revisit to Morthoe will not provide this establishment with our custom, we will explore other dog friendly venues, if they exist!

I booked this hotel as it looked really nice on the website. However, got there and the reality was far different and I actually wondered whether I'd got the right place until the lady confirmed that I did have a booking!

Anyway, our room was VERY basic. The bed was uncomfortable, wallpaper was peeling off the walls, the curtain rail looked as though it was just about to fall off the wall and the carpets didn't look as though they'd been hoovered in a long time. No wardrobe - just a hanging rail. There was also a permanent stench of cooking fat flowing up the stairs from the kitchens which didn't do anything for our mood.

On the upside, the bed linen was clean and ironed and the shower room looked pretty clean. If you wanted a hairdryer, there was one provided per floor but was shared with the rest of the rooms on the floor - you had to pick it up from off the radiator on the landing and put it back when you'd finished with it.

The bar was pretty grim - very "working man's pub" - and it felt dirty.

A real shame as the people who owned it seemed very nice and given it was a pub, wasn't that noisy after 11pm (although I gather the place doesn't close until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights which could be a problem for some people). I don't think it would take much to turn this place around and make it a real money spinner. Strip off the wallpaper, put in a lick of paint and some new carpets and it could be brilliant.

I have stayed here before and returned.

Rooms are clean and tidy. Breakfast is good and freshly cooked to order. Something to bear in mind is that the hotel is lowest cost in Mortehoe £55 double onsuite so its not the Ritz, but not bad at all, we use it as a last minute bolt hole if the weather looks good. Parking is avaiable just over the road and is £2.50 for 24hrs or free 8pm-10am. Staff are nice and friendly at hotel. It also takes dogs and kids.

A few words of causion - noise travels around the hotel badly so you can hear people banging doors, inc front one and rooms badly sound proofed so you hear everyone coming back from the pub or Wooly each night - bad news if your looking for an early night!

Also many rooms face east so the sun floods the rooms at 5-6am so its hard to sleep in (see comment above - could be that you get 5hrs sleep!!)

Personally wont be going back but would recommend hotel for stag / hen or young people. Several more mature (quiet) B+B/hotels exisit nearby- probably our next port of call.

Mortehoe is beautiful - enjoy your stay.
