“Excellent stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

Staff are very welcoming, hotel is in a good location and has a lovely garden out the back which is nice to sit in on a nice day.
Rooms are a little small but perfectly formed. Very clean.
The food in the resturant was lovely.
Thanks!

We went as a group to experience some of the sporting facilities that this hotel is famous for, and I have to say the hotel itself is all you would expect from a premier country establishment.
The staff were friendly and helpful, rooms clean warm and authentically county, log fire in the lounge, well presented dining room and excellent food, with a very comfortable ambience, I do feel however that they let themselves down with the sport provided (which is what we actually went for) and I got the feeling that they were trading on their name and had lost sight of the service provided and expected!
We went for two days shooting and our main grievance was with the second day (although the first day wasn't stunning) which was a small walked up/driven day for mixed game, small it certainly was, except for the cost which was top end for that type of shooting. It was disorganised, poorly planned researched and executed, and whereas when dealing with the wild these things can happen, there was no back up plan if all else failed.
We felt so strongly let down by this that we wrote to the hotel airing our grievance and although they were very apologetic, we felt it wasn't dealt with in a hugely satisfactory manner. This was a great shame as some of our party had hoped to return with their wives and partners for fishing holidays later in the year, sadly for all concerned that probably won't happen.

I accidentally set off on holiday a day early only discovering my error when a long way down the M6. Arriving in Devon in the evening I called in at a couple of places to see if they had a room available. A copuple pf places I tried just couldnt be bothered and finally I saw the sign for the Arundell Arms so called in expecting similar unhelpful reception. I was received really warmly , shown to a lovely room , had a delicious bar meal and was generally made to feel welcome. The staff were so nice, nothing too much trouble and I am so glad to know hotels like this one still exist. Thank you

We stopped off here for lunch on Monday. The staff were friendly and welcoming, but we waited nearly half an hour for our table It turned out that we were the only ones in the dining room. Its a very elegant room, with nice decor. The service was well timed, although it didn't really seem as if the waitress was doing her normal job. The food was good, except that the fish was a bit overcooked. However the portions were larger than we'd expected and I think for a lunch, we should have kept to just two courses. Had to laugh when we were told that we could only pay at the table with cash or go to the bar if we wanted to pay by card. Overall OK but could be improved without much work.

I am glad that you enjoyed your lunch in our restaurant. The food is all cooked from fresh local ingredients to order so there will inevitably be a delay whilst we prepare your meal. Most guests prefer to spend time in our bar before being taken to their table when their food is ready.

As you will have noticed, the main part of the hotel is 300 years old and has thick stone walls. As a result the credit card machine cannot receive a signal in the restaurant which is why we ask guests to use their cards at Reception on their way out.

I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel soon.

This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel which we booked on the Travelzoo offer. On arrival we had lunch in the hotel bar, the food was excellent. We had a lovely room and the evening meal was outstanding. We will definitely be returning.

Returned to the Arundell for a weekends fly fishing as it has to be one of the best sporting hotels in the country. Upon arrival we started to relax with a drink in the garden and then met David and Tim who are resident fly fishing experts- great to catch up with them and get tips for the nights campaign to try and catch a sea trout- expert advice and met Alex who acted as the guide for the night- a great guy who is very knowledgeable about fishing. The 3 guys are very approachable and have a wealth of knowledge not only about fishing but shooting as well and are one of the reasons we keep returning.
The hotel staff are a credit to the hotel and food was exceptional. The lounge area is a great place to sit and have coffee and read the paper and the attentative staff ensure you are always looked after.
I cannot praise the staff enough and hope the owners realise it is one of the reasons we keep returning, either to fish or shoot and look forwards to our next trip to shoot more snipe in the winter

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms next to garden are really nice

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us again and took the trouble to share your experience with others.

I am glad that you single out our staff for praise. I appreciate how good they are and the difference that they make. Without them and their positive attitude, we just have a building. It is they who bring it to life.

I look forward to welcoming you back later in the year.

Have only stayed here once but have eaten here on many, many occasions. The atmosphere is always welcoming, the food always top-notch and not badly priced and the staff, some of whom have been there for a long time, are friendly and welcoming. Even though it does not look much from the front, indeed, you may well just drive past on the way through Lifton, do pull in off the road and go in for a meal - you wont regret it!
