“Brilliant Start - appalling end!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013 via mobile

We stumbled across this hotel on the way home from our holiday and at first were very impressed! Amazing location and beautiful house and grounds! A bonus being they loved dogs and as we had our two with us this seemed to ve too good! It was!! We had to order at reception after waiting half an hour without anyone coming to take our order from the terrace! A further half an hour wait for mediocre sandwiches! If paying nearly £8 a time I would expect more than cheap sliced bread, cheap untidy side salad drenched in dressing and undercooked bacon not to mention another cheap baguette with hardly any filling!!!!! Drink order didn't materialise so ordered again two large soft drinks with ice and received two small drinks with no ice! We had considered rounding off our holiday by staying overnight but decided not to on the basis of this food and lack of service! Prices aren't cheap but worth it if the whole experience had been better!!

My wife and I got married at the Buckland Tout Saints Hotel on the 30th March 2013. The whole day was just wonderful and exactly as we wanted it to be, and the hotel staff played a huge part in achieving this. From Gemma the Manager, to Leanne, Helen, Louis, Rachael, Becca, Nick, Sharon and more, all the staff made all of us feel so welcome, relaxed and comfortable, and nothing was too much trouble. During the months of planning, it was very much the same - Andrea the wedding planner and Gemma the General Manager were both outstanding in the service they gave and the attention to detail we needed to create the perfect day. The actual day itself went so smoothly and without a hitch, and our guests have all commented on what a beautiful location it is and what excellent service the staff gave.

We could not disagree more with another recent reviewer on tripadvisor who said that it is "...not the place for a wedding..." - our food was lovely, and the cash bar was not an issue because we had informed our guests beforehand. We had also advised our guests staying elsewhere of the need to book taxis in advance, so that was no problem either. Once guests staying elsewhere had left, of course residents could have drinks charged to their rooms - I seem to recall a large gin and tonic as proof of this! All in all, a truly beautiful day from start to finish, and outstanding service and attention to detail from all members of staff. The Buckland Tout Saints Hotel most certainly IS the place for a wedding!

Room Tip: Another reviewer on here criticises the hotel for putting them in one of the rooms at the top, which...

Having recently attended a wedding here, I would advise prospective couples to look elsewhere. yes, the location is beautiful and peaceful. A lovely old building, well furnished and in idyllic surroundings - possibly everything you would need for a short break.

However the lasting memory of this wedding was that the hotel managed to 'take the edge' off what should have been a wonderful day for the couple getting married. The day started badly with the bride in tears because the hotel had put them in the WRONG bridal suite - not the one the couple had booked. The ceremony went beautifully after a faltering start (the hotel had left the 'piped music' running into the ceremony room so the registrar had to halt the service, while it was turned off).

The meal choice made for the wedding breakfast was a simple one - 3 different roasts, but the Pork that I had was tough and chewy - apparently the chicken was very nice though. This was followed by a simple choice of 2 sweets - one hot, one cold. I (as many others) had 'plumped' for the Apple Crumble, which was very tasty - a shame we had to wait 10 minutes for the accompanying custard to arrive, by which time many guests had lost patience and eaten their crumble.

During the evening, the wedding cake was served with the evening buffet - all having been cut and put out on display. the following morning, the newly-weds went to collect what was left of the cake (to send on to absent friends and relatives) only to find the cake had been left out all night, uncovered, so had dried out and was of no use at all. They were offered 9 cupcakes as 'compensation'.

If you are still contemplating a wedding here you should also consider:

They only operate a cash bar - no card payments, and drinks cannot be charged to your room if you are a guest. The bar is also very overpriced.

Location - yes, peaceful and beautiful - but if you have guests attending your wedding who are not staying - warn them of large Taxi bills, which may affect the number of guests who actually turn up (despite you having paid for them in advance).

Very pleasant and attentive staff, but possibly not experienced enough to deliver a wedding 'package' despite having a dedicated 'wedding planner'

My wife & I have just returned from an absolutely excellent three day break at Buckland and are so delighted to have found it, we are both in our eighties and at last I admit that now and again a SatNav might be useful, and that is true of Buckland Tout Sant, but once you have found it what a welcome. A wedding show was in progress on our arrival but in no way did this deter the staff from the welcome and assistance we received. A cream tea was produced and from then on service at the bar, the tremendous food and the continuing kind and attentive service that we were given through out our three stay stay could not be faulted , it was so obvious that the staff not only worked well together, they enjoyed being together and it showed. Thoroughly recommend it.

Such a lovely hotel, with welcoming friendly staff, excellent food, and a very comfortable room, all you could hope for, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. It is quite hard to find, so leave enough time to get there, but well worth it - sheer peace and tranquility.

Imagine living in your own beautiful home, in deepest rural Devon, with a team of staff that are dedicated to one thing, you! This is Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel. A very warm welcome on arrival, we were shown around the hotel and our luggage taken to our room. The staff were incredibly talented, professional and flexible and no request was too much trouble at all. The room was lovely, the views were stunning and the location was such that there were no distractions except the beautiful views and perfect quietness. Wellington boots and umbrellas available for muddy walks and beach visits were a god send as my husband only packed his best shoes. Dining was excellent and the food standard was consistently very good as we stayed and ate dinner for 3 nights, we didn't want to eat anywhere else and no queuing at the bar for drinks, as we were literally waited on hand and foot. The service was simply outstanding across the hotel. My only regret is that I didn't arrive by helicopter to land on the hotels helipad:) One day...A special thank you to Helen and Maria who were wonderfully accommodating and made our stay so relaxed and fun and to the young lady that booked our spa treatment so efficiently. This is not just a hotel, it's an experience that I would recommend to everyone.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was on one of the upper floors and could best be described as warm modern cla...

Lovely hotel to stay in for the weekend even in the middle of February. A really warm welcome when we arrived, we were shown around and our bags were taken upstairs to our superior room, which was well worth the little extra. Dinner and breakfast was lovely for the two days of our stay and well presented. Wine selection fairly good and reasonable price for such a hotel as were drinks before dinner from the bar. All staff were very pleasant and helpful. The lanes - well they are narrow but what do you expect in very rural Devon. We had a lovely weekend and left feeling totally relaxed. Would recommend to all.
