Having seen the reviews, and that it was ranked 1st for Exmouth, we were looking forward to our evening here. However, overall we were disappointed. The Exmouth egg was not as shown on the Baker brothers...it was in fact a fish pattie with a poached egg on top. Perfectly edible, but nothing I couldn't make easily at home. The smugglers pie was ok but not as flavourful as it could have been, particularly the gravy, and the beef was scant. The jubilee tart was very poor. Generous amount of clotted cream, I grant you, but to bring out the flavour of what, I couldn't say. No sign of any whole cherries, and certainly no flavour of any.
I'm not quite sure what the intention is with this restaurant....if they want to charge upmarket prices, they need to seriously improve the food quality. Alternatively, reduce the prices and for pub food it was ok. The owners certainly appeared keen and upbeat, but maybe slightly unsure of which market they want to cater to. Their PR skills are second to none, however, particularly the clever touch of presenting business cards with the Tripadvisor logo on and a request for reviews, along with the bill. Well, this is mine.

In response to your review, firstly, our menu clearly states that the Exmouth egg is a crab and salmon fishcake topped with a soft poached egg, it does not say that it is the Devon egg as seen on the Bakers Brothers, this is because the Baker Brothers did it thier way on the show telling us it was up to us how we did the recipe after the show. The Smugglers Pie is made to the exact recipe provided by the Baker Brothers, as is the Jubilee Tart with the slight difference of other fruit added as cherries are seasonal so we were told by the Baker Brothers to make it with seasonal ingredients. Many of our returning customers, if not all, come here because we charge reasonable prices and not over the top like several places. We know the exact market we cater for and that is the many returning customers we have who enjoy decent food at decent prices. We put the Trip Advisor logo on our business cards because Trip Advisor is a well respected marketing tool used by all businesses. Lynne and Andy. Beacon Vaults owner.
