Visited during the wonderful 'Exmouth Christmas Cracker.' Visitng the Clipper couldn't spoilt the evening but what a disappointment. Some years ago was reliable for standard fayre at reasonable expense. This is now not the case, the poor value for money I shall leave for other reviewers whilst I concentrate on the appalling customer service. The problems;
1. Went to the designated 'Family area.' The only table available was filthy. The whole area was tatty and felt dirty so we moved to the front of the pub, which appeared a little cleaner but can be described at best as 'tired.'
2. We ordered a large round. The wine measure was short of the small 175 ml in the wine list by some distance. When pointed out to the barman he told us that a small measure was 125 ml. When we pointed out that the was no 125 ml on the wine list he topped up to the 175 ml 'free or charge. Can't see how it was free as we had ordered and paid for 175 ml. Very poor service, why lie?
3. Our children ordered a portion of chips from the bar. The chips were delivered quickly by a waitress who would not put the bowl down as we had children with us. The same children who had just ordered the chips and given the table number. She asked our whole group to move to the filthy area at the back of the building. The waitress stated that this was due to police regulations but had no further understanding or explanation to offer. I do wonder if this is really the case as we have on many occasions sat in this area with our children as have many others. We didn't persist and our children ate at the back of the pub whilst we monitored them.
We will never be going there again. There is clearly a lack of staff training, monitoring or accountability. The problems essentially arise from poor management or even worse poor management attitude towards their customers.
I would advise anyone considering a trip to the Clipper to look more broadly, there are a host of pubs, bars and restaurants where you will find much better customer service combined with better value for money.
Avoid at all costs.
