Description: The River Exe Cafe is a floating barge just off the Ski lane on the River Exe, and is in the heart of Exmouth’s water sports fraternity, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking, sailing to name just a few, however it is also situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, protected by Natural England. Open from April to September only . The Exe Estuary is home to many rare birds and creatures including Avocets, Osprey and of course our friendly grey seal. With the potential to take up to 100 people on board the Cafe has been designed very much like the “Ski in Ski out” wooden chalets found on the ski slopes of many ski resorts, but with the intention that the quality of food and service exceeds all expectations of the external look and feel. The barge has a licensed bar and covered outdoor space with heaters and indoor seating to relax well into the evening without suffering the cold. Customers to the barge really are of all ages and walks of life, ranging from the usual river users and water sports enthusiasts to bird watchers, artists and holiday makers. Special events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, stag & hen parties to corporate & team building days can be arranged. Private and exclusive use of the barge is also available.

We have just returned from a superb dining experience on board the River Exe Cafe. The scallops starter was succulent, fresh and served with a cold house white wine which complemented the fish superbly. Monkfish wrapped in crispy bacon was just heaven.... That dish would win Master Chef ....

The host was a delight, the food was worth making the river trip for and the view was unbeatable..... This place is very special and well worth the boat journey out to the middle of the river Exe...

We can't wait to go back.

“So cool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

Stressed out at work and needed a break and this was such a therapeutic experience from the water taxi trip out to the café to the last dregs of coffee. I set aside all the stress and just sat in the sunshine soaking up the atmosphere and watching the river traffic. The small fish and chips was actually substantial with firm cod flakes and an awesome hand made batter; the Summer pudding exploded with fruity flavours balanced beautifully with the cream and even the black filter coffee was rich yet smooth. As the sun sparkled on the water, the couple next to me phoned the water taxi requesting another hour before pick up caught up in a moment out of time and I understood exactly how they felt. An unique experience.

“River exe cafe - great experience!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

What a cool place this is. Great atmosphere. Friendly, happy, attractive staff, who despite being incredibly busy made sure that we were well looked after and comfortable. The food was good and wholesome but with a bit of a flourish. Prices for every pocket. Seafood was fresh and delicious. Would have liked more choice of wine in the £16 a £20 region, but house wine was good. The whole experience is a bit of an adventure and we would thoroughly recommend it - even on a grey day. Inside is warm and cosy and blankets are made available if you feel a little chilly. We even managed to have a speedy return to the harbour on the water taxi rib. This isn't smart, al la carte dining but it will be a day to remember.

“A great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

I thought carefully before I wrote up this floating restaurant because it's such a find, but since lots of others have already done so, the secret's out of the bag.
Exmouth is famous for its mussels and fresh fish and this place knows what to do with them. The staff are great, the kitchen knows how to cook fish perfectly, the whole meal is suitably slow but that doesn't matter as the water taxi only comes once an hour. Try the local wine from Pebblebed (who have been backed by one of the Dragons) but the rest of the list is pretty good too.
Prices are reasonable and the experience is fab. Very relaxing and a great place to go with a group. Allow yourself at least an hour more than you would normally anticipate and don't attempt to drive home afterwards.
Lovely.

“Very unique, loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013 via mobile

Nice boat trip to get there. Had olives, garlic bread and bread with two types of olive oil to start. Monkfish with duck & curry sauce, fish paella and vege burger for main. I had monk fish and loved it :). Eton mess and various large desserts to finish. Friendly and obviously proud staff. Thanks very much.. We'll come again before end of season.
