“Top Shearings Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

The Grand Hotel lives up to it's name. It's the best Shearings Hotel we have ever stayed in. We have just had a two night stay along with some work colleages.
We had a seaview room (No 15) which was large, comfortable, spotlessly clean , great bathroom, well stocked hospitality tray and wonderful views.
There was a good choice of food which was well cooked and nicely presented. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient.
The only negative in our break was that the evening entertainment's music was Very loud and as one of our party has a hearing problem we struggled to find anywhere to sit away from it.
I would definitely recommend this Hotel and we will certainly be using it again.

Room Tip: Choose an upgraded seaview room. It will be worth every penny.

Thank you for your review
Its great to hear you and your friends had a fantastic time here at the grand and found everything to your liking, I do hope the sound level of the music in the entertainment room did not bother you too much, i will mention this to the Agency that books all our entertainment who in turn will speak to all our Entertainers.

I am pleased that you found the holiday very good value for money. We have a fantastic location overlooking the beach in what is a very unspoilt part of Devon.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Grand in the future, Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

Its great to hear you had a nice weekend with us, and we thank you for writing a positive review. Shearings are good value for money and are located in some wondeful parts of the UK. We hope to see you again here at the Grand Hotel.

Just returned from a weekend break - Friday to Monday - at the Grand Hotel in Exmouth. Good hotel with excellent relaxing lounges, bar and entertainment room. Set directly opposite the promenade overlooking the sea. A lot of refurbishment has taken place to this hotel - the public lounges have been redecorated and new furniture installed. Many of the bedrooms have also been renovated - if you can afford it (£18 per person per stay) it is well worth upgrading to a sea view room which offers every facility. Good varied menus throughout with at least 3/4 choices in the evening for the 3-course meal and a hearty breakfast. Really pleasant waitresses in the dining room - nothing was too much trouble and the service was quick and efficient. Entertainment in the evening consisted of 3 games of bingo which we were luckly enough to win twice, a quiz which was fun, a vocalist then background music. We were allowed four drinks per person each evening which kept the bill down. A great holiday at a great price - thank you Shearings. This hotel is in a good location - just minutes to the town centre through a small but very nice park. This was our first experience of a last minute trip with Shearings and we enjoyed it very much. We will certainly be trying out some of the other locations they offer around the country.

Room Tip: It is worth paying the extra to upgrade to a sea view room. The one we stayed in had been renovated...

We booked a room with a sea view so that I could stay in the room and rest if I wasn't well enough to walk about. When we arrived for a 4 night break for hubby's birthday we had been upgraded to a lovely Premier room. All recently decorated and revamped, what a treat for both of us. We traveled by car but there was also three coaches booked for the same amount of time. No problem there! Meals were served in record time (nothing to write home about) but basic and filling. Full English breakfast and three course evening meals plus coffee. Staff everywhere in the hotel were fantastic from reception to bar staff and chamber maids. Waiting staff were very happy and remembered our requests from the previous days. Well done the Bay Grand, this was our second visit.and will visit again.

We have just returned from a 4 day break with national holidays and alhto' the hotel is clean and commands a prime position on the sea front there is no atmosphere, everyone sits around in the bar reading newspapers provided by the hotel which was very kind of them but this seemed to cut off the art of conversation between guests, I had the distinct feeling of being in a library some of the time.
The dining room staff are hard working and pleasant with nice smiles, serving up decent portions of food, the bar staff however were very sullen and a smile would not have gone amiss here, altho' maybe that was down to the fact that everyone had their noses stuck in a newspaper.
Perhaps the hotel could create a reading room which would alter the atmosphere in the bar !!!!

We had a ground floor room no 4 which had a limited sea view as we looked straight into the car park the only privacy we had was to pull the net curtains across hence no view, bearing in mind I paid for a sea view, when I asked the assistant manager if we could have an upper floor seaview he said they had all gone despite the room above us being empty all weekend.
Our room was comfy enough apart from the noise from the lift and the extractor fan from downstairs, but we slept good when all these noises stopped. The bathroom was ok but the shower head needed descaling as it trickled out but the water was very hot, the bed was spotless and very comfy and the hospiality tray was replenished every day and the towels changed.
The entertainment reflected the price we paid but did the job and why everyone was crammed into such a small space when there is a fantastic ballroom unused is beyond belief.
This could be a great hotel with a few minor changes and some attention to the things that dont work, but worth all of the £99 we paid .

Exmouth is a nice resort with lovely views across the estuary and good flat walking , the town is within easy reach of the hotel as is the railway and bus station and the marina nestled between the luxury apartments is worth a look .

Room Tip: avoid no 4 on the ground floor, if you want a sea view go upstairs !!!
