“Our favourite English hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2010

Our favourite English hotel, possibly becuase it feels more like an old rectory! - and has been done up with such gloriously understated good taste.

Huw & Sam are wonderful hosts.

What a delightful hotel. This was our second visit in 2 years and we were delighted to see the new paint and decor tweaks.
Sam and Huw were as welcoming as ever and the food, ambience and everything was just superb.
Situated on Exmoor, it makes a superb base for walking and visiting the local coastal and moorland beauty spots.
We are looking forward to another return visit

Bring on the squidy brownies and I'll be back. Seriously if you are a foodie just stop looking elsewhere - you have found your chosen accomodation.

I stayed at The Old Rectory with a group of friends for the third time at the end of October at what has now become a regular event each spring and autumn. On each occasion we have all been more than delighted by the service received and Huw & Sam's fantastic hospitality.

I have stayed in a different room each time we have visited and all have been spacious and well appointed with an eye for detail. I am really looking forward to seeing my favourite room, Lawns, which is being refurbished this winter.

As they say in the movies - "We'll be back!"

We stayed here in October for 3 nights to celebrate my partner's 40th and had the best time. As many other reviewers have said the hotel is in the most wonderfull location just off the coast path - what we loved best of all though was the lack of traffic or any other noise; the place is soooo tranquil and we loved sitting in the garden by the waterfall just chilling and watching the birds.

The hotel has been stylishly refurbished - they have got the mix right - classic but with a modern twist - and the place has a really comfortable, friendly atmosphere . Our room was lovely and stylish with a view over the garden, a really comfy bed and a great bathroom.

Huw and Sam run the place in a friendly and relaxed manner. The hotel has just eight bedrooms and it felt more that we were staying with friends at a rather exclsuive house party rather than an impersonal corporate hotel.

The food is fabulous and all sourced from local farms - we booked the half board package and, as the hotel is quite remote, I would recommend doing this as we thought that it was fantastic value. Dinner was a real event - we really enjoyed talking to other guests over pre dinner drinks and canapes before tucking into wonderfull food and wine. For breakfast there are a number of interesting options on the menu - we really enjoyed the blackstone eggs. The local bacon was just delicious!

Not the cheapest, but our stay was well worth every penny. We think that we will probably go there again next year but save our pennies and treat ourselves to one of the newly refurbished suites.

We had very high hopes for our stay here, to celebrate our anniversary. We had chosen it for its enviable location - just 500 yards from the beautiful North Devon coast path. Quite nice hotel but the communal rooms were missing a roaring fire and comfy sofas - somewhere to curl up after a hard day's walking. We had to be down for dinner at 7.40 and were soon ushered from our table after dinner to take coffee in the conservatory, it's part of a weekend away to be leisurely. Dinner was a hushed affair and Eva Cassidy is VERY depressing, especially hearing her 2 nights in a row over dinner!! Breakfast with the piano music which kept getting stuck was amusing but the one slice of toast each and small pot of coffee and milk was not. When we asked for more toast, we were told "but you have some" so I had to explain that it belonged to my husband and please could I have some more brown toast!! I know times are hard but costs need to be kept down in a less obvious way to your guests.

We were really sorry to read this guest’s comments and to learn that she was disappointed by our hotel.

We aim to always exceed our customers’ expectations with good service and hospitality and the overwhelming majority of our guests are delighted by our offering. Unfortunately it would seem that, in this instance, our offering was not quite what this couple were looking for.

The observation that we are cutting our costs with strict portion control of coffee and toast at breakfast is incorrect. When coffee is ordered for one person, we serve a 3 cup cafetiere and this is refilled as many times as requested - the same applies to toast. When this guest requested more toast, we were a little confused as there was already toast on her table. When she demanded toast of a different variety, this was prepared and brought to her straight away without question.

This was our second stay at The Old Rectory Hotel. We were welcomed back very warmly and shown to our spacious and very tastefully decorated suite. We were served afternoon tea in the garden on our fist day and in the conservatory on day two which housed an ancient and abundant grape vine, the fruits of which we enjoyed during our stay. A delicious four course dinner was served in the charming dining room. The food was locally sourced and cooked to perfection. Breakfast was a feast of again locally sourced produce and an excellent choice was available from Full English to as light as you like. Full marks to Sam, Huw and staff for the excellent service and standard. See you again next year.
