“A little gem in Exmoor's crown!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

An excellent place to stay! The place had so much character and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We were offered more coffee at breakfast & when we mentioned having it in the garden nothing was too much trouble - it was brought to us on a tray! The food was delicious. It was our intention to eat in the restaurant but the bar meal we had on the first evening was excellent so we ate outside on the second evening as well. The gardens were colourful and clean and being able to dine by the river was an added bonus. The meat platter salad was first class - thick slices of meat in abundance & such a tasty jacket potato! Excellent value for money and it was good to see a fine selection of local beers & ciders for sale.
A most enjoyable stay and we certainly hope to return.

Room Tip: Room 4 a good size with a large bathroom.

......we have visited this restaurant more times than I can remember. It is about time I reviewed the Sunday Carvery. The quality and price of these meals is exceptional, the staff are always friendly and welcoming, the overall experience is amazing. Jerry who works behind the bar on alternate Sundays has always made myself and my wife at home with his banter and friendliness. I cannot recommend the carvery more so than we made the round trip of over 100 miles to experience this standard of food, when touring Exmoor we always try to call in on a Sunday for dinner.....6* out of 5*!!!!!!!!!! See you soon.........Mike and Sue.

Food excellent, though the service could be a little slow for large groups. A lot of disturbance during sleep time, baying youths, noisey packs of hounds in the early hours, the odd fire alarm going off...Parking difficult, tight bays get full by middle of day. Staff very friendly and extremely helpful.Great spot to explore from, beauty spots in easy driving distance.
Tips, try to get a room on an upper floor of the lodge(a detached building outside)
Don't park on the entrance to the car park near the restaurant bay window.(large delivery lorries reversing regularly )

We can only apologise for the fact that the car park was full and the noise made by customers leaving but the hot weather has certainly made people chose to be outside later than is normal. With regards to the fire alarm, again apologies but something that was totally out of our control, and all there for the safety of our guests!
We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the delights that Exmoor has to offer and hope to welcome you back in the future

We took advantage of the White Horse Inn's three nights for two offer and were not disappointed. The food for evening meal and for breakfast was of excellent quality and we enjoyed every morsel. There was a danger of eating too much as it was so tempting and we are now on strict diets!!

I was advised on booking that the room (15) was a little on the small side but had the compensation of a king-sized bed, so no complaints there. The bathroom was also a little on the small side and the fresh air spray left by the bath perhaps was for guests to cover a faint damp smell possibly from the shower curtain?

The staff were very attentive and all wanted to go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. However, sometimes the chat and banter from the waiter was a little excessive and perhaps could have been reduced a little.

On the whole a great stay in a lovely part of the country which we would recommend to others.

Room Tip: As you would expect in an old property the floorboards creak and especially those above room 15. For...

We really appreciate you taking the time to leave your comments. As you understood, all rooms in a hotel of this age (16th century) vary greatly in size but are all decorated and furnished to the same high standard. We really hope to be able to welcome you back soon. And accept our apologies for the creaking floorboards!

A beautiful peaceful place to have lunch. Perfect setting by the River Exe in the little village of Exford at the centre of Exmoor. One of the best lunches I have ever had, jacket potato with lovely fresh, thick cut ham, a huge chunk of brie and salad.

We have stayed at the White Horse in Exford a number of times over the last five years. This family run Hotel represents a haven of peace in a perfect setting alongside the River Exe, in the small village of Exford where there are more horses and dogs than people!! Situated on Exmoor with easy access to a number of excellent walks and local places of interest as well as a number of National Trust properties. The Hotel specialises in a number of offers including 3 nights for the price of 2 and 5 nights for the price of 3. Pacakages are on a half board basis and the evening meal is really a five course gastronomic experience wich a wide variety of dishes, all excellently cooked and presented. The area around Exford is quite hilly and perhaps not so suited to wheelchair users and really directed to those who enjoy outdoor activities and countryside walks. Notable amongs which are the Tarr Steps, an ancient flat stone bridge across the River Exe, the Doone Valley and associated reminders of Lorna Doone and a number of nearby villages with excellent 'local' pubs which make a very pleasant lunchtime 'watering hole' Basically the who scenerio is faultless. Another fearture offered by the Hotel is the Exmoor Land Rover Safari which provides the opportunity of seeing the 'real exmoor' and all of the deer herds. Check their wensite for 'special offers'

Room Tip: For my personal choice I would recommend one of the 4 rooms in the Annexe, those on the ground floor...

Just returned from a 3 night stay which continues to set very high standards. Self service breakfast has everything and if not, staff will get. Evening 5 course meals very good if you can last the course, everything home prepared, locally sourced and beautifully served. Peter and Linda, the owners, cannot be more helpful or friendly, and other staff compliment their approach. (Martin the barman is an example, almost has your top-ups poured before you reach the bar!!) Bar meals are brilliant and you can swap from formal to bar if you wish to vary your meals a bit more!!

Room Tip: Room 15 is good, or any of the lodge rooms. The new superior rooms are brilliant but try the four po...
