“A gem in Devon”

Friendly, comfortable B & B. John & Penny make you feel "at home" as soon as you walk through their door. The rooms have everyhing you need for a lovely, peaceful stay, but if you want to join them downstairs for a drink then thats on offer too. Would heartily recommend staying here.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments following your stay with us at Mellstock. It is a shame you didn't stay for an evening meal but if you are ever over here again, maybe walking the footpath the other way round, we would love to see you again for bed and breakfast and an evening meal

Wonderful B&B,great rooms, hosts, excellent food and super clean. If only England's other B & B's would try to achieve this standard.
Restaurants in Combe Martin leave a lot to be desired, but Mellstock House will do dinner for you and they are licensed

We stayed at John & Penny's on a long weekend away. A lovely welcome awaited with a nice cuppa and biscuits and a chat which lasted almost two hours! Such genuinely friendly people who run Mellstock House with such a passion that it emanates throughout the house. Our room was the lovely big one with a living room area too. Everywhere was immaculately clean and always smelled so fresh. It was a place where you felt very welcome from the minute you walked through the door. The food.... breakfast was delicious, plentiful and from local produce which does make a difference! Although we were offered an evening meal we had already booked a meal out before our arrival, but it smelt delicious and very tempting! We had a fantastic time and will definitely be going back again very soon. Will be good to see John and Penny again!

Room Tip: If you are there a couple of nights... go for the "suite" ... perfect for relaxing and put...

At Mellstock House you will feel at ease, comfortable, and you will find kindness and generosity. The costs are reasonable, the services good, and the breakfast is great.
A simple and special place where to feel at home during your traveling around North Devon!

We only stayed for one night and left early the following day. The rooms were warm and comfortable with adequate ensuite. Ours would have had a sea view if it had been light enough to see it during our stay! Very welcoming owners and a good stay overall. Only let-down was the breakfast which seemed of the 'Value' ingredients variety for the cooked options with tinned goods and basic white bread not giving a particularly tasty start to the day. In summary a good stopover and far preferable to a soulless motel option.

Thank you for your comments following your stay with us at Mellstock. Overall you seemed to enjoy your stay but were disappointed with breakfast. Our cooked breakfasts don't include any tinned food (unless you ask specially for baked beans!); mushrooms and tomatoes are fresh (not tinned). The bacon and sausages are West Country where possible and the eggs free range and local and you have a choice of fried, poached, scrambled or boiled. We offer a choice of farmhouse bread, white or wholemeal with west country butter and choice of jams, marmalade and honey. There is a choice of 5 cereals, yoghurt and fresh fruit, juice and selection of teas, coffee etc. Glad we were able to offer you a room with a view but impossible to benefit from when it is dark outside We agree!

I stayed with Penny & John at Melstock House a couple of years ago when I was a 'freshie' on the South West Coast Path (Week 1, Day 4). I almost had to crawl up to the house after my tiring day but I was given the warmest welcome imaginable; tea and biscuits on the terrace, tipples from the bar and the best fish pie supper I have ever tasted! They are a delightful couple and I have no hesitation in recommending them.

We stayed here over Easter 2013; it might have been cold outside but everything from the welcome to the room to the food was warm inside! Penny and John are wonderful hosts, making you feel at home in their home. They are very friendly and helpful, with good tips and advice on places to visit, walks to enjoy etc. We stayed in Room 4 (top floor so mobility might be an issue for some) with views over the back of the house onto the hillsides beyond. The whole house was clean. Our room had a good sized en-suite bathroom. The room was comfortable and functional without being large. There was a built-in wardrobe and chest of drawers, plus a separate chair, and bedsite tables of course. Tea/coffe etc plus biscuits (replenished if eaten!) available in the room. Breakfast was excellent with choice of cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, juice etc, and a choice of hot cooked including the full English, smoked salmon or just a simple continental of croissants, meat and cheese. We didn't need much lunch! Penny and John have a drinks licence and a small but very well stocked bar, run on an honesty basis. We spent an enjoyable evening over a drink chatting to Penny and John about life in Combe Martin.

As has been mentioned parking might be an issue especially in high season. John kindly moved our car one morning to allow other guests to leave before us. It is handy having parking space right next to the house but only room for 3 cars. Most of the other guests staying at the same time as us were walkers, so no major problem. But be prepared to park in the town on some occasions; or not go out! Mellstock House and Combe Martin itself are perfect central points for exploring the North Devon coast. Loved this place, will recommend to anyone, and will stay again someday.
