A good time was had by us yet again. We have been coming for five years and each time gets better. Lovely homely meals cooked by Jean eaten in the beautiful dining room plus plenty of entertainment provided by Cliff in the bar. We have our savings tins which we are filling up for our next visit when we hope to meet up our new friends again.

Another fantastic stay with Jean and Cliff - as we stepped through the front door of The Poplars we instantly felt that we had returned "home" as we always do. Our long weekend went all too quickly but the feeling of having been cosseted and entertained remains. As always, every meal home-cooked by Jean was delicious and the evenings spent in Cliff's bar were such fun. Our room, with balcony, and views to the Bay was warm and comfortable - so cosy. We are already booked in for the New Year's extravaganza and are looking forward to being back in Coombe Martin. At Cliff's suggestion we visited Porlock Harbour - what "awesome" scenery as you travel down Porlock Hill! Surely, there is little better anywhere on our planet? Thank you again, Jean and Cliff - see you after Christmas...

Room Tip: Balcony rooms (with private outside seating) overlooking the pool have wonderful views of the Bay an...

My wife Shirley and I were fortunate enough to be invited to one of our best friends 50th birthday celebrations at the Poplars hotel a few weeks ago. We arrived a little later than the rest of the party and were greeted by Cliff & Jean who can only be described as a genuinely lovely couple. Within minutes we were made to feel at home and shown to one of the nicest rooms we have ever stayed in. The room was immaculately presented and had a brilliant balcony which over looked Combe Martin bay. What a tremendous weekend! First class company in a first class hotel, who could ask for more? Many Thanks, we would love to revisit during the summer months and take a dip in the pool before diner. .

We have been here a few times now and celebrated my husbands 50th birthday last weekend with family and friends.

Always good food and hospitality from Jean and Cliff. Hotel is spotlessly clean and nothing is too much trouble from two lovely people. Our weekend was made very very special.

Can't wait for our next visit.

Kick off your shoes and bring your slippers!! The Poplars Hotel is home from home (and more), a little gem nestling on the North Devon coast. Cliff and Jean combine to form the perfect partnership, Cliff with his quick wit, anecdotes and love of music (ask him to perform his bottles routine) and Jean whose culinary skills are second to none (check out the cheesy pork). English food at it's very best. You arrive at The Poplar Hotel as guests and leave as longlife friends. Long may you reign!!

Room Tip: If you have a disability, the second floor rooms can be a problem, but Cliff is only too willing to...

Combe Martin itself may not be to everyone's taste as it's small and quite quiet. Personally my partner and I love the place, partly because it is small, partly because it's a world away from the towns and cities; but mostly because of the absolutely stunning views and proximity to the sea.

Poplars Hotel is a short walk up a hill from the small beach and pubs. As soon as you walk in it feels very inviting. The rooms are immaculate and I would recommend a balcony as they are a great size and have fantastic views of the sea.

The owners are very friendly and helpful. There is a licenced bar and even a pool - however we weren't brave enough to try it on a rainy September. Breakfast was great and they even doevening food if you request it.

I would fully recommend this place!

My wife and I, our son-in-law, two daughters and 4 grandchildren stayed here for four nights in early June 2012. Our rooms were of a very good standard and very clean, one of which at the rear of the hotel, overlooked the outdoor pool and views across to the sea. Our hosts Jean and Cliff were friendly and very helpful and our breakfasts, from a varied menu were scrumptious and plentiful. Other guests who have stayed here have commented on Cliff's role as co-host and he is for sure a very entertaining and amiable host and clearly enjoys helping to make the guest's stay an enjoyable one. We all had a lovely three course evening meal on our day of arrival which we all enjoyed. The weather was not quite warm enough to use the outdoor pool but our grandchildren did take a brief plunge for a giggle! We all made full use of the games room/TV lounge on the ground floor in the evenings. It was fun to re-visit a pool table after many years and before the end of our short stay I finally managed to win a game against my 11 year-old grandson! All our family enjoyed staying here and we all love north Devon. Recommended visit for a rainy day has to be 'The Milky Way' near Clovelly; great value for money especially for families. When the weather is fine, children - and adults! - can have lots of fun around the local beach cove, crabbing! Lots of beautiful places to see near Combe Martin and north Devon in general.
We would certainly return to stay at the Poplars and highly recommend it to couples and families.
Thank you for a lovely stay Jean and Cliff!
