The Plume of Feathers has to be one of the worst places I've ever stayed, and for £70 a night for a double room, I really expected better.
On arrival we were shown to our room by one of the bar staff. It was a dingy hovel with three single beds, a rickety wardrobe and a sink. To add insult to injury, the window blind was mouldy and there was no en suite. To be fair, I hadn't checked about the bathroom situation when I booked, because I assumed that for £70 we would get our own bathroom.
I told the barman that I'd booked a double room - and asked if that could that be provided. He disappeared for a few minutes, and reappeared saying we could stay in the pub next door - The Railway Inn - which had the same owners.
The room in the Railway Inn was just as bad - a small double bed with a bedstead straight out of the seventies (shell-shaped and velour), a single bed, a sink and a white MFI wardrobe which wobbled when you looked at it. By now I was thoroughly depressed, but as I'd already paid a deposit of £105, and as we had several friends who were camping at the pub or were staying in its bunkhouse accommodation, we felt we had no choice.
Things went from bad to worse - the landlady was incredibly rude to a number of our party that night, and although the food at the pub was actually quite decent (for pub grub), we felt very unwelcome, and nobody wanted to eat there the following night. Neither did we want to spend much time in our room, which was uncomfortable and downright miserable. The matress was rock hard, and the bed too small for two people to sleep comfortably. The carpet was grubby, and the bathrooms were covered in mould (one of the showers was even held together with gaffer tape!). There also seemed to be floorboards missing in places, covered by carpet.
It was a similar story in the B&B in the main pub. Two of our party left after one night because they found dog hair in their beds (again, two singles), and were kept awake until 2 in the morning by loud music emanating from the bar downstairs. We'd planned to stay for three nights, but left after two because the weather was foul and we couldn't face another sleepless night in an uncomfortable bed.
The management of The Plume of Feathers is, quite frankly, taking the mickey. There aren't many places to stay in the village, which is popular with walkers due to its location in the middle of Dartmoor, and they take full advantage of that by charging top whack for a very poor standard of accommodation. They are also rude and unfriendly.
Needless to say, we won't be back.
