“Pub Food at Hotel Prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

I had two evening meals here over the Ten Tors weekend, possibly their busiest time of the year. Had the special menu on day one, all starters £5, mains £10.

We both had the prawn cocktail, small but OKand a nice falvour. We both had the minute steak as a main, mine was OK, but hers was fit only for the dog (which is where it went).

On night two we tried the a la carte Had a small bowl of mussells, sauce was thin and average, my wife had thew pate which was excellent. She then had fish and chips which were fin, I had the liver which was well cooked but smothered in a dark and rather glutinous sauce.

Service was as good as it could be given the place was packed. House wine was drinkable and there was beer on tap at £2 a pint. Iyt was cup final night as well, so the bar was crowded.

This is not fine dining, but average pub food. They do have a pizzaria, but we did not try it

Fantastic experience with this period hotel in Okehampton. The room, like much of the hotel, was large and dated, however this added to the atmosphere. The ales in the bar were excellent, the food and restaurant service was very good. The restaurant is very modern and service superb. Mark, the duty manager(?) was extremely helpful in trying to secure us the Saturday night, even ringing B&B's in the area to find a spare room. Would happily go back. You will not get plush, luxurious opulence but what you will get is a comfortable bed, decent food and drink, fantastic service and after aa nice full English in the morning, a sense of satisfaction and value for money.

The new HB bar in the White Hart hotel is situated to the left of the traditional pub inside and is a very modern and trendy winebar which would suit winebar goers as Okehampton only has pubs in the town. Its very clean with confortable seats, it has minimal decor but very good food at good prices and drinks are not too expensive. It can feel a bit clinical at times so a bit more decor say plants and pics on the wall would make it look warmer

I've stayed at the Whitehart three times now and have yet to experience a significant drawback - the food is excellent, the rooms are wonderful (of the three different rooms I've stayed in) and the staff are very pleasant and helpful.
Considering I've visited in November, February and March, the Whitehart is what I hope to find when I'm looking for a warm, cosy, nicely decorated small-town hotel, complete with open fires in the lounge area and bar.
Rooms are spotlessly clean and have recently been re-done in a minimalist style - the beds are absolutely some of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. I do believe that when it comes to attention to detail, this place punches above it's weight.
All the Whitehart needs to do now is install double glazing, especially on the rooms which front the roads, not that these were particularly busy on the occasions when I visited.
Recommended.

The White Hart Hotel is a place we stay frequently when we visit the west country. This time we were put in a room at the top of the hotel, right at the front. Lovely room, new bathroom, but it was so noisy.... not only from the traffic, but also, I assume, from staff going to bed late at night / early in the morning crashing and banging above us.

Small issues - this is a lovely place to stay, if you aren't used to traffic noise, ask to stay in one of the rooms towards to back of the hotel.

The staff as always are extremely friendly, and the welcome very warm.

We had dinner - which in all honesty was a very limited menu, so I thought the quality could have been better, but ok for the money.

Breakfast was freshly cooked - choices were ok, we had a full English,

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 31 - lovely but noisy if you are not used to traffic. If you want a quieter room a...

Wasnt sure what to expect from this 2 * hotel, but it was clean and comfortable and they provided a good breakfast. We stayed for 2 nights and used it as a base for our walking weekend. Unfortunately on our first night we had an awful nights sleep, woken up at 2am by a noise coming from the room next door which could have been a boiler room. it sounded like a generator. It was ongoing and we made several phone calls to reception without any success. It eventually stopped at exactly 8.30 in the morning making me think it was something on a timer. We advised staff that we wanted a different room for the next night or we would check out. Some people in our group staying the other side of this boiler room also complained of the dreadful noise. They did indeed, find us a different room and we then had a comfortable night in a comfortable room. It appears that they also sorted out the source of the problem. When checking out, they apologised again for the problem and made an adjustment to our bill which was fair of them. Overall it was clean and not a bad little 2 * hotel.
