A superb day out led me to this wonderful railway station at Okehampton. Greeted by friendly staff I had a trip on the D.E.M.U to Meldon Viaduct and return then enjoyed lunch in the beautiful cafe at the station. One of the best meals I've had in a long time, not just for quality but also for quantity.
when i decided to visit in December to see how the 'polar express' works, which in the book is famously hauled by a steam locomotive turned out to be hauled by some old diesel engine, and poorly maintained coaches, and quite frankly was overpriced, thank goodness I did not waste my money with a trip on it.
Upon researching, I found that two companies run this railway, the granite line company which runs heritage services (very reasonably priced, knowledgeable staff, and extremely pleasant all round day out) and then the 'rip off merchants' who run the polar express and other tacky things.
It really is a shame, because personally from visiting this railway it has so much potential, but is very under utilised.
All in all mind, a very good day out and superb lunch in the buffet at Okehampton Station. Well done (to that side of the organisation)
