“Lovely Lunch in the Bistro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Myself and 2 friends had lunch in the Bistro during the week. I have to say that the weather was a contribution but the food itself was gorgeous. We sat out on the decking in the sun and were checked by staff a few times if we needed anything. I have read various trip advisor comments and have to say that some are rather harsh. The location is just amazing, staff attentitve and overall a wonderful experience. I will definately be visiting again soon, hopefully to stay the night with my family.

An overnight stay for my birthday was so relaxing we felt we had been there for a few days. We were greeted on arrival by resort staff and shown to reception. After checking in we were shown to our room our luggage was carried to the room. The room and the facilities were excellent
.
We had afternoon tea on the terrace and dinner later in the restaurant. After a good nights sleep
we enjoyed a filling cooked to order breakfast. We found the general areas of the hotel very relaxing and the staff who work extremely hard were on hand to provide drinks etc.

The swimming pool is very clean and has access to an outdoor area overlooking the grounds. The onsite activities are well run in a relaxed and informative manner.

We will be going again.

Thank you for your excellent feedback and for taking the time to post it. I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your birthday stay at Bovey Castle, in particular the relaxing and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel and its staff.

The recent good weather has given our guests the opportunity to fully enjoy the outdoor areas of the hotel, whether it be for afternoon tea on the terrace or simply a gentle stroll through the estate after dinner. It will be a pleasure to share your comments with the team and we look forward to welcoming you back shortly.

To celebrate my wife's birthday our daughters took us out for afternoon tea. Superb location but decor is somewhat tired.
Their tea was okay but as for my gluten free offering it was dreadful. The bread was hard as in concrete as was the second scone. I gave up and complained. In fairness the manager agreed it was disgusting. He advised I could have something else and I would not be charged for my tea. I declined. I pointed out that we had advised of my gluten intolerance weeks before when booking. Bearing in mind tea costs £19 per head this was poor. The kitchen need guidance as for a luxury hotel this is not acceptable.

Bovey Castle is renowned for its exceptional afternoon tea and we apologise that you did not perceive this when you visited recently.

From your feedback, we would like to express that your experience does not reflect our normal standards of service for gluten-free visitors, whereby our head chef and patisserie chef brief our lounge team regularly to ensure that any dietary requirements are highlighted and catered for satisfactorily . Gluten-free afternoon tea will now be readdressed with action taken to prevent this scenario from occurring again.

Should you wish to discuss this matter in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact the hotel manager.

I'm sure if this is your first trip to such a place, or don't stay in luxury hotels often this place would seem wonderful BUT in my opinion, for the price paid, and compared to many so called 'luxury' hotels at the same price level Bovey Castle lacks in many respects.

Don't get me wrong the setting is sublime and the surroundings inspirational however, there were many things at the hotel both in terms of the hotel itself and the service that didn't warrant the 300-500 pound price tag attached to the rooms here.

These issues for us included:

- Rooms no where near as good as those pictured online, even when booking a higher room class
- Our room had damp coming through the wallpaper, and we appreciate its an old building this could be wiped off the wallpaper
- Carpets were stained throughout the property and didn't appear the quality you'd expect of a hotel at this price
- Some carpets on stairs were actually threadbare
- Bedside lamps were cheap 10 pound Ikea style
- Some furnishings in room were just cheap (although some were stunning)
- Waited 45 mins and 3 reminder calls for a iron to be delivered
- Room service was cold on arrival, and had to call again to get a bottle opener so we could open a bottle they'd delivered
- New locks, held in by bits of wood had been put into doors and no effort had been made to paint the door after so holes in front door around lock
- Lots of paint flaking and wood scratches
- Reception staff stood having a chat to other staff and waited to finish their conversation before attending to the queue at reception
- Not the best in-room information, although information/maps/etc were available at reception but it would have been nice if the surrounding walks were in the room guide as you can plan before leaving the room.

There were lots of other issues that made this place just not worth the money.

We appreciate its an old building so there are many fabic issues which you'd expect (creeking floorboards, badly fitting doors, dodgy windows, etc) and none of these bothered us as we understand its an old building but carpets shouldn't be theadbare or stained when paying 300-500 a night.

On the positive side the building itself looks amazing, and the communal areas (lounges, etc) are beautiful. The porter staff were awesome too, lugging our many suitcases up 2 flights of stairs, and nothing was too much trouble for them.

I'm not a fussy person but I do believe in good value. I've said in many hotels at this price level and I'd say this delivered the worst overall value. There are equally good hotels which deliver

They market themselves as top end luxury, but I just couldn't see it and wonder if they are living off a past image. Luxury has changed and they need to look at hotels like the Triannon Palace at Versailles who market themselves at a similar price level and setting, but deliver a significantly better experience for the same price.

The hotel is overpriced for the experience and exists on foreign (particularly American) tourists who I assume were there for the 'English Historic Castle' experience. Its not a castle, and was renamed as such in the 90's. It's actually a English Manor House built by an industrialist in the late 1800's and has little historic connection other than being on land previously owned by the Earl of Devon. There are many better examples of such a place in the UK - although the stunning location does make up, in part, for the other failings in the hotel and service.

Not sure I'd come back but perhaps OK for 1 night with overseas visitors.

We stayed with another couple to celebrate combined anniversaries and spent a fortune to book suites because it was a special occasion. It was absolutely worth every last penny!! Our only regret was that our vacation allowed for only a 1 night stay which is not long enough to enjoy this fabulous resort hotel.
We were assigned suites 49 and 50 which are spectacular in every way. Both had a large living rooms, king bedrooms and bathrooms bigger than some people's studio apartments! The views from the rooms were lovely, the furniture top quality, the beds soft and made with luxury linens.
When we arrived we were greeted by Harley, the fledgling falcon, at reception and then taken on a tour of the hotel by a member of staff. The tour is a great feature because the hotel has so much to offer and this is a great way to familiarize a guest with what's where.
We were able to enjoy tea the afternoon we arrived and it is excellent. We also arranged room service wine and hors d'oeuvres before dinner and it arrived when requested and the portions were generous and the quality excellent. That night we had dinner in the Edwardian Room which is an elegant but still a relaxed restaurant. The food and service were very good although everyone's steaks were a little overcooked. [We've had this problem before at many restaurants where the cooks really don't believe you want your steak medium rare or rare and always cook steaks a little more than requested.] Breakfast the next morning included a large buffet as well as a good selection of cooked to order selection.
We really hated to say "goodbye". We're looking forward to another chance to stay at this wonderful hotel.

My husband and have stayed at Bovey castle three times in the last two years, it is one of our favourite getaways, the warm welcome you receive, the lovely appointed rooms. My favourite place is the bar, we ave enjoyed many cocktails whilst checking out the menu, I also like the lounge for sitting reading a daily paper. my husband has fallen for the bird of prey mans dog, I couldn't get him away from it! Dinner in the grill has always been first class, the only disappointing thing is when really busy the buffet breakfast. Please stop this you are better than that. We look forward to revisiting later this year.

Room Tip: Castle rooms are lovely

I visited Bovey Castle on 16th of July for Afternoon Tea with some friends to celebrate my friends 60th birthday. It was a very hot day and we had a table indoors so we requested a table outside on the terrace and the staff were very happy to sort it out for us. The tea was lovely and the setting was amazing, if it had been a cooler day we would have had a walk in the grounds. The poor staff looked extremely hot in their uniform which I think could have been slightly more relaxed in the heat of the day. The addition of some umbrellas on the terrace would have been a real bonus as would some nice padded cushions on the benches. Having said this it was a lovely afternoon treat which I have already recommended to friends.
