“romantic getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

We celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary at Bovey Castle and it was truly a wonderful experience. The Castle Room was lovely although there were a few stains on the carpet in the bathroom which I felt a bit disappointing. The food was of a very good standard, although we felt it was a bit pricey. The drinks were quite expensive too, but overall we had a great weekend.

A romantic getaway is one of the most popular reasons to visit Bovey Castle, even if Dartmoor may seem like an unconventional choice of destination for a weekend away with a loved one. It's the seclusion of the hotel's moorland location and the calming sophistication of Bovey Castle's staff and gloriously ambient public areas that provide an iconic backdrop for romance.

Thank you for bringing to our attention the minor issue with the bathroom carpet. It is merely unfortunate that this was not spotted before your arrival, but action has been taken to resolve this.

With regards to cost of dining at the hotel, Bovey Castle offers its guests two restaurants to choose from - from the fine dining experience found in The Edwardian Grill to the relaxed eatery that is the Castle Bistro. Pricing in both of these establishments vary distinctly, but we feel these prices are a fair reflection of the quality and consideration behind every dish, such as our Dartmoor reared fillet steak for £32 to a classically satisfying stonebaked pizza for £9.50.

A February Friday afternoon to saturday afternoon discounted trip through Travelzoo and a wonderful experience for myself and the other half. On arrival in the car, we were met by a number of friendly and helpful uniformed staff who unloaded bags and parked our car - they even took my golf bag and trolley down to the golf club where it was set up waiting for me later. After check in we we were given a personal tour of the facilities before being left to our own devices - me to the challenging golf course and wifey to the spa for a treatment. The bedroom was on the ground floor next to the Bistro, but there was no noise. In fact the room was brilliantly situated for the steps down to the pool and leisure area downstairs as well. The room was large and comfortable as was the ensuite bathroom, with great views over the valley. The milk for the coffee and tea making facility was limited which surprised me a little. Mrs S was most impressed with her treatment and I spent nearly an hour in the pool / sauna / steam room - all very good with towels supplied. The lounges and bar areas are most impressive and characterful. We ate in the Bistro where the service was again very very good. The food was not too expensive and on the whole was pretty good. We subsequently realxed in one of the lounges and had a very relaxing evening followed by a good night's sleep. The buffet style english breakfast was a bit of a let down - most of it was only luke warm and the sausages were very basic. Check out was smooth and the system of the Hotel adding a service charge tovarious things meant that there was no messing or embarassment in having to tip people all the time. All in all, a fantastic 5* experience, with only one or two little things to be picky about. We shall be returning and would definitely recommend Bovey Castle to others.

First impressions are paramount; from the moment our guests drive through the hotel's gates, across the sprawling golf course and up to the moment that our concierge greet you upon arrival.

Our housekeeping team delivers milk to bedrooms daily to ensure its freshness and this is also replenished when required. A pint of milk is typically enough for a couple sharing a bedroom overnight, but we are always happy to replenish this at the request of the guest or during turndown.

It was disappointing to read your feedback on our breakfast experience, the majority of the items are cooked fresh to order with only the continental ingredients laid out as a continental buffet in the restaurant. Bovey Castle's head chef, Marc Hardiman, selected the hotel’s breakfast sausages on the merit of their high pork content and taste and by no means are a basic sausage.

Thank you for your detailed overview of Bovey Castle, your wife and you clearly made the most your time at the hotel by experiencing a selection of the facilities and activities on offer to our guests.

I booked a mini moon as a surprise for my husband some months before we got married in December.Having seen a programme filmed there some years ago with a group of youngsters being trained in the catering industry by Michelle Roux jnr, it is somewhere we both said we would go "one day". The original room we were booked in cost £700 for 3nights without breakfast so I was expecting a lot better than we were shown. I asked for an upgrade as was just not happy with the shabby room although it had part view of the valley. For an extra £100per night our eventual room was beautiful with the most amazing view! However, the heating in the room was non existant and in December this was most noticeable. Having bought it to the attention of reception, two portable heaters arrived with the promise it would be sorted the following day.It wasn't! We were shown an alternative room which wasn't as nice and by then had comfortably settled in apart from the chill factor which to be fair was greatly helped by the portable heaters, so decided to stay put. The whole point of our visit was to experience 5star treatment and that is something Bovey Castle is not. The staff have not been trained sufficiently, I.e filling up my husbands glass before mine, taking his plate away whilst I was still eating. These are basic rules of hospitality that are just not acceptable in this kind of establishment. We had a complimentary bottle of champagne at dinner which was a nice gesture but not sure if this was because of our room or that we were on honeymoon! On checking out I was all ready to do battle regarding the extra £100 per night upgrade to find that it had already been deducted from the bill. The grounds are outstanding and we explored the surrounding area on foot as we were lucky weather wise but we would not return to Bovey Castle as it just isn't worth the money and should be re-graded star wise.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the valley - funds permitting!

The hotel manager, Federico Aresti, is attempting to contact you directly to discuss your TripAdvisor review. Should you wish to talk about this matter further, you will shortly have the opportunity to discuss your stay with him.

We appreciate that you have acknowledged that efforts were made to improve the heating situation in your bedroom. Every bedroom in the hotel is heated centrally and we provided a short-term solution to ensure that you not did experience discomfort from the cold on Dartmoor in December. Unfortunately, the issue with the heating in your bedroom couldn't be resolved as easily as originally envisioned, thereby leaving a change of room the only alternative, but it was your decision to choose your existing bedroom over a warmer substitute.

Stayed at Bovey Catle over the past weekend and had a wonderful time with my wife. The hotel is magnificent and very picturesque. Reception was excellent and very helpful. Our room large and very well appointed and warm without being stuffy. Swimming was a delight in their beautiful pool. Sitting in their beautifully appointed lounges were one of the highlights and felt like a bygone day. Ones of our highlights was the falconry display after breakfast, a really unusual touch and very interesting. I guess the two areas they might want to work on would be the food and children. Breakfast was good but not great for this size of establishment and the temperature of the food and drink lukewarm. On our arrival we had a small group of children playing on the main stairs and hiding behind the vintage furniture. On the positive it was child friendly but for us took the edge of a relaxing retreat.

I can’t help feeling a little disappointed. This was quite an extravagance for us but one we thought worth it for a relaxing weekend which my husband and I had been looking forward to very much.

The service was excellent; the staff very attentive, friendly and helpful at all times.
The hotel is beautiful and the lounges very comfortable but the fires very smokey, so much so, you couldn’t use the Cathedral room at times.

We were very pleased with our bedroom which was nicely decorated, a good size, had a very comfortable bed and a lovely view of the valley, but the bathroom was very scruffy and damp smelling.

The bistro wasn’t of the standard I expected for this style and quality of hotel. The restaurant was better but the food over seasoned. Cream tea was gorgeous however!

I found it strange that the spa and swimming pool were not directly connected, and by far the most disappointing part of our stay was the pool area. We found it very noisy because of the number of children using the pool; we could have been at our local public baths. There weren’t sufficient loungers available around the pool, the water was quite cool and chlorine levels made our eyes sting for the rest of the day; not at all relaxing.

The falconry display on the terrace was a nice touch and we wished we had been able to take part in one of the falconry experiences which were unfortunately fully booked.

On the whole, our stay was okay but not worth the significant cost.

My husband and I have stayed here twice now, such is our enthusiasm for this hotel, which is set in beautiful grounds and has wonderful facilities. You feel quite self-indulgent as you make the most of the pool, spa, restaurants, cosy nooks and crannies or grand fire-place- featured sitting rooms. The staff are attentive, polite and friendly and always willing to help.
However...there were a couple of things this second time around that took the shine off our experience: The milk in the small room fridge was sour even though it was in-date; our room service breakfast arrived almost too late and was luke- warm; we had to ask for the tea, coffee and toast twice at breakfast in the restaurant; the bed cover was very shabby and stained.
We mentioned all of this to the Manager, who was appreciative of our feedback, but it has to be said that for a 4-star hotel, we expected better.
Never-the-less, my husband is still eager to return in the future as he feels so relaxed there. I'm not so keen, as I suspect there are many other country house hotels out there that provide equally good service and facilities without the hiccups we experienced.

There is no doubt the location is perfect and the plethora of staff are helpful and efficient but the food was a disappointment. A three course meal looked the part and was served with aplomb but little things were wrong. The starter of small shavings of Gravad laks without mustard sauce was boring and almost tasteless. The main course included a square of the ubiquitous pork belly, 3 slices of underdone pork fillet and a cube of potato. As I said it all looked fine but pink (underdone) pork is not an option for me. The pudding, a slice of treacle tart was fine but extremely small. Overall the visit to this splendid hotel was spoilt by the meal.
