“BRITAIN AT ITS FINEST”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

My wife and two children have just returned from a weeks half term holiday at Bovey Castle.
The hotel and staff were both first class, and the scenery surrounding the hotel is breathtaking.
All of the staff are beautifully dressed and very friendly and attentive. A special mention for the Hotel Manager Frederico Aresti who was always at hand to greet and talk to the guests. As a keen golfer the on site golf course is terrific and well worth playing. The indoor heated swimming pool great fun for the kids.
All in all the Hotel shows the best of Britain.

Room Tip: Always go for a valley room if you can as the views south across the valley are spectacular. The ju...

Stayed here for a couple of nights with husband and our 8 year old son. We were in Room 24 (Junior State Room) which was a lovely large room and plenty of space for us. Room had gorgeous views onto Dartmoor and the golf course etc etc. Room was very clean and there were some lovely touches such as the child size robe and slippers for our son. Lego Room Service also massive hit with our son :-) The hotel is beautiful and the public rooms are lovely. The hotel has a very relaxed atmosphere which is great and just what we needed. The tour when we arrived was much appreciated (big shout out to the lovely Polly who gave us the tour, remembered our son's name from when I had spoken to her a few days previously on the phone to arrange some activities for husband and son and who was just a very natural and enthusiastic member of staff). The pool area was great - lovely big pool - and was much used by us. The falconry display and egg collecting was also loved by our son and was a nice touch. The Manager Frederico was on hand constantly meeting and greeting.

We ate in the Castle Bistro on the first night and lunch on the second day but we found it extremely limiting in choice. I am vegetarian and felt the choice could have been much better. Food was decent enough but we both felt it was not 5 * standard really. Good wine list and very decent prices. The staff were young and quite enthusiastic BUT....they just did not seem to be able to get an order correct. It was quite amusing in the end but again, the food service (Bistro and at breakfast on two days) was just not 5 * at all. Many times the waiter came to our table when we had obviously been given our order with an order for another table. It happened over and over....we must have been really chilled out though because normally this would really irritate me but the staff are generally lovely. Good breakfast choice I should add :-)

Our conclusion - we would definitely go again for the wonderful, relaxed setting and the facilities. Felt like we had been there longer than 2 nights and some of the staff were just super - Polly plus lovely chappie on front door who turned out to be the Resort Manager (sorry didn't get his name). However, it felt like we were paying 5 * prices for 3 * service on a couple of occasions. The staff are young and vibrant but felt a little like they were on a training course out of season. Didn't put us off though....so relaxing!

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back of the hotel looking onto Dartmoor and the Golf Course. Just lovely...

Just didn't live up to hype (or prices). You are charged for everything with a service charge added - feels very cheap and desperate. The spa is really not a spa at all....just a few cheaply converted rooms with no traditional spa ambience. The waiting room/relaxation room is very makeshift and the spa beds rock hard. The Edwardian restaurant was very nice but the food was not - over prepared and fussy, we were a large group and not one of us had a great meal. Wine list was a shock in such a place - a few pages of very medicore over priced wine, I was expecting a full impressive offering. Service was patchy throughout. A lot of people seemed to be staying there on a discount basis - i found this surprising as it is half term so presumably busy. Plenty of dust and cobwebs in the common areas and carpets everywhere need a good clean - if you are going to allow people to walk around in muddy boots (which i agree is normal in a venue designed for the outdoor living) then you really need a good cleaning program....Bovey Castle doesn't have this. No decent wifi and no mobile phone signal - when I enquired I was told that in a national park this is normal but they had a phone booster in bistro (not much help to anyone who wanted to be anywhere but the bistro!).

A group of ladies (7) visited Bovey Castle for a 60th birthday treat to have a champagne tea. Very disappointed with the service and the food. On arrival our 2 cars were taken and parked for us. Very nice . Entering the building is a nice smell of wood fires . We were shown to our table which was a window seat. When we booked it was mentioned that it was a birthday surprise and could we bring some bunting at which we were told that this would be provided. Sadly it wasn't. We had a dirty cup amongst the 7 !!! The tea arrived . Sandwiches, scones and small cakes . Sandwiches were okish ....scones very nice (but a small dish of cream and jam for 7 people ) and we had to ask for more !!! The cakes were very stale and very disappointing . There was also a chocolate moose which was bitter and tasteless. We had to ask for our champagne and moved to the chairs by the fire to have it. Can you imagine our horror as a member of staff came and started hoovering. Having been in the restaurant trade for many many years I know it is one of the rudest things to do and definitely not good service . We left and staff didn't know where our cars were and we were left to wander around the car park looking for them . On leaving we all smelt very strongly of smoke , so much so that coats had to be aired outside and clothes washed. Can't imagine what it would be like to stay in an atmosphere like that . Having said all this the Castle is in a wonderful position and we made the most of our visit. We wanted it to be a special experience and it wasn't and so very disappointing .

Just got back from a one night stay here with my wife. We were booked in to the bistro type restaurant, but decided to pay the extra and go to the proper restaurant as it had a cafe feel about it. Generally everything is very good, very well organised, mounds of staff on hand to help out and food extremely good. The price for food is a lot - £24 for a beef pie, 2 carrots and some mash - but then you are paying for the ambience. The whole thing was spoiled by one couple complaining very loudly for a long time, although the hotel did reduce our bill because of the disturbance.
The only reason for not giving this a 5 was it felt over-vouchered - if there is such a word. Most people were on some sort of offer - and the seating plan had NO MORE TRAVELZOO OFFERS written on it. Obviously, they have to make money and this brings the people in - but it did feel a bit crowded.
Nonetheless - good place, nice surroundings and worth the trek.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room overlooking the grounds and golf course - away from the car park

Bovey Castle is my favourite hotel. It is grand yet feels really homely. The lounges are just gorgeous as are all the rooms. I have stayed there many times and the decor and service are impeccable. Whenever there is a problem, the staff are quick to put things right. Mr Aresti, the manager, deals with incidents very thoroughly and wants to make sure everyone has the best stay they can possibly have. We did have a problem but it is being dealt with thoroughly and I don't think you can find a better place to go and treat yourself. The lodges too are heavenly as is the pool and spa. I'd still recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Try to avoid a room next to a supplies room ( room 40 was not the best but the view is nice) as this...

my wife and I stayed at Bovey Castle last night. We drove down through rain and snow, and to drive up to such a stunning building, be greeted by such incredibly welcoming and friendly staff was incredible. This hotel is a pure oasis of beauty, elegance, and relaxation, the lounges with roaring log fires are second to none, a impeccably clean spa and pool resort included. My wife commented on leaving that its the best hotel she has ever stayed at... a must visit
