“Bovey Castle is an incredible place and has the most accomodating staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2011

We stayed in Bovey Castle in April with 3 teens and one 8 year old. The kids loved archery, clay pigeon shooting, feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs, playing with the ferrets, watching the falcon display and eating! The castle staff are incredibly accomodating trying to ensure that every request is met. The kids felt like they were part of a large family as the staff knew them by name. If they asked for a smoothie and one restaurant did not have it, they went to another to make it. Ben is a jack of all trades - greeting us, serving coffee and taking the kids on adventures, Louise takes care of every request with ease and a smile - she is the person every hotel wants to steal away, Ian and Craig were wonderful too. Best place for families - a 5 star luxury with no pretenses. Can't say enough good things about Bovey Castle.

The week spent in the lodge had to live up to high expectations indeed. I am glad to say these were surpassed. The lodges are so luxurious yet make everyday living seem like such fun Although one would never want to leave a big mess it was tempting just because of the incredible house keeping which was completed twice daily with military precision. Nothing was too much trouble. An unexepected heatwave resulted in the immediate delivery of a superb outdoor bbq by the very helpful staff. Relatives left some fresh Cornish produce for us at reception and of course it just appeared in our fridge as if by magic.

The views over the lake made both balconies seem like heaven and the stress just seemed to lift upon arrival, helped by the sounds of nature right outside the window, I never thought
owls and woodpeckers could be so medicinal.

Afternoon tea was splendid if not far too large ut some would say this a good thing!!

Breakfast in the Edwardian Grill impressive, excellent service and delicious food. Good choice too. Dinner in the Grill was a wole different ball game. Service would rival the best of the best and the food exceptional especially the lobster. If you dine here the cheese trolley is a must although I didn't want to miss out on the souffle either so had both!

We dined at the local pub in North Bovey and could not believe the food. Value for money incredible and the Bovey Range Rovers took us there and collected us for a very reasonable fee. Would highly recommend this. We also walked there in the day on one of the Bovey Caste walks and stopped for a lovely sandwich.

Not at all a complaint but the yellow plastic bin in the kitchen of the lodge was not in keeping with the luxurious fittings and I think Iwould be inclined to replace it with a Brabantia or equivalent. For anyone still reading there is no mobile reception anywhere near and 6 of us all had different networks. Wi fi in the lodge was a godsend.

A bigger sign before the turning of the main gates would really help people not used to the roads as the Sat Nav took us up the service entrance just before the gates and i was terrified of meeting other traffic as i could not even begin to think about reversing on such a track!!!

I cannot wait to return to this magnificent establishment and thank you for the stay

We hired a villa in the grounds, it was sizeable, and easily capable of taking 6 people in all, 4 adults and two teenagers, it was clean and tidy with all necessary conveniences.

Lovely building, and fantastic views, great reception service, and very friendly and capable car parking staff. On site taxis very useful, prompt, and not expensive. However, the taxis will be needed, as the poor quality bar service (verging on rude), and the extremely slow main restaurant service (booked for 7.30pm, eating main course at 10.40pm), prompted us to eat off site two of the three nights we stayed there.

Excellent range of on and off site activities, first class golf course, and very enjoyable off site clay pigeon shooting for the adults, and quad biking for the teenagers. Not cheap though, around £80 for 2 for golf, £180 for 2 for clays, and around £100 for 2 kids for quad biking, when the use of the taxi has been added in.

Overall a very enjoyable visit to the area, everything perfect, except the bar and main resteraunt which should have left a nice taste, but instead added a rather bitter taste to our visit.

Room Tip: Hire a buggy for your stay if in a villa.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review and share a balanced insight into your stay at Bovey Castle. It was disappointing to read that you described the hotel's bar staff as 'verging on rude', particularly as the hotel's outstanding levels of service and professional and friendly staff are frequently citied as one of the most memorable aspects of a visit to Bovey Castle.

With regards to your experience of the Edwardian Grill, we acknowledge that the timings of your meal were both unfortunate and unacceptable. Your comments have been passed on so that they may be reviewed by the food and beverage department, as part of the hotel's internal investigation into rare instances of complaint such as yours.

Stayed for 3 nights with the family. I don't think I have ever stayed at a hotel which offers such a high level of attention and service. The hotel rooms are great. The Lodges are also outstanding. The golf course is spectacular with great holes and views of Dartmoor all around.
The restaurant and bar service was also at a standard you would expect.
My only complaint would be breakfast service. It is nice to have table service rather than a buffet where the food has been standing for hours. But when the english breakfast arrived with bacon as hard as cardboard and mushrooms which must have been cooked hours before and a hard fried egg, I assumed it was a one off and said nothing. The next day was a repeat. What you are getting is a pre-cooked buffet breakfast at a la carte prices. - they need a new breakfast chef or stick to a slice of toast.

Room Tip: Skip breakfast !

BoveyCastleHotel, Bovey Castle management team at Bovey Castle Hotel, responded to this review, April 26, 2011
Following feedback from guests, it was decided by Bovey Castle's executive chef to move away from the traditional buffet breakfast towards the introduction of a fine dining breakfast. From the description within your review, it would appear that you did not experience this new a la carte breakfast at its best, for which the hotel must apologise.

The hotel's executive chef has discussed this matter with his breakfast team and has set in place a new system to be implemented at breakfast time, which will ensure that this incident is never repeated.

It goes without question that Bovey Castle looks forward to welcoming you back in the near future, when we will be more than delighted to show you that your disappointing experience of breakfast was a rare occurence.

There are many types of hotels in the world but Bovey Castle is definitely in the luzury category. I don't have anything negative to say about the hotel so I'll just pick up on the highlights. The staff were friendly and efficient and willing to "go the extra mile". Our room was luzurious and comfortable, a really nice place to be. The grounds are beautiful and we wished we had more time to explore them. The restaurant was excellent - our starter was crab and the sharpness of the garnish really complimented the richness of the crab meat - we had duck for the main course and it was beautifully pink and delicious - we both sampled the cheese board for dessert and had a most wonderful choice of British and Continental cheeses - to accompany it all we had a lovely bottle of Californian Pinot Noir, which was top notch. This was a lovely dinner and the breakfast the next day was of similar quality.

This is not a cheap hotel but I think you will consider that it is money well spent if you stay here. The best things in life may be free but luzury like this costs money!

(We didn't sample the extensive sporting and spa facilities so I haven't commented on them.)

We visited Bovey for a wedding, although treated ourselves to an extra night and were not disappointed with the experience. Bovey creates a wonderful first impression - the long, winding drive up to the castle is great, and we were immediately whisked into the care of the duty manager, who looked after everything for us. We were able to relax as soon as we arrived.

We each enjoyed a lovely spa treatment, although were slightly disappointed that the spa is on a completely different level to the pool facilities and we were not offered a herbal tea or something afterwards in the relaxation room. The gym facilities are nothing to write home about, although I suppose you could take plenty of exercise exploring the grounds!

The common areas of the hotel are very comfortable and inviting. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the restaurant and it was lovely to take our after dinner drinks by the fire in one of the drawing rooms. Generally we felt the level of service was good.

Our room was on the ground floor near the stairs and bistro, which meant it was a little noisy but the room was spacious, comfortable and well maintained. The bathroom was big with a good shower, although looked a little tired.

The concierge car management service was not completely reliable - it was great having our car looked after and in theory, it was convenient simply to tell them when you wanted to use it and they would bring it to the door. However communication seemed to break down somewhere when we were trying to get our car back to drive to a wedding, and not only was the car not there when we had requested it to be, but the concierge actively ignored us for a time, clearly too busy to worry about us. Eventually, my husband demanded our car keys and went and got the car himself, although this was hardly a 5* experience, particularly as it was raining, and by this time we were running late for the wedding we were going to...

Another minor irritation was the automatic addition of service charge on to absolutely every service the hotel provides - I haven't seen this before, and do not begrudge it because the service was great, however I'd probably rather the already expensive prices took into account the proper payment of the staff for the service they provide. We were also surprised on check out to find that our daily newspaper was not complimentary.

The welcome we received on arrival was outstanding. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and made us feel at home right away. This attentiveness and desire to please continued throughout our stay. Our room was beautiful (although the radiator didn't work and one of the fire doors in the corridor squeeked everytime it opened), great tea and coffee facillities in the room, very clean and comfortable.

However, the food service and food quality let our stay down. We felt there were not enough staff to manage taking orders and bring out the food. Each meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) we had to wait longer than expected to order and even longer for the food to arrive. We have a young baby and had to wait over 30minutes for her lunch to arrive. I had to go and find someone twice to ask where it was. Also, for the price of the stay we would expect a good buffet at breakfast for things like cereal, fruit and yoghurt but everything came from the kitchen. Overall the service was slow and didn't appear very joined up and the food quality below our expectations for a place such as this.

The food and service didn't spoil our stay and overall we really enjoyed our weekend, we felt very relaxed and the staff were helpful and accommodating for each of our requests or questions. The location is stunning and the facilities excellent - wellies and water available in the porch, the spa has a very spacious reception/sitting area and the treatment rooms also spacious (and quiet). The falconry display is amazing and childrens playroom very well equipped and clean. Great too that there are bees and chickens for the little ones (and the grown ups) to visit.

Bovey was a real treat, a fabulous retreat and hope to go back someday, thank you!
