“Lovely room, ales and great craic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

We popped in one lunchtime just to check the place out on our way through Dartmoor but had such a lovely time and great chats with the locals and bar staff that we decided to come back to Chagford the following day just to stay at the Ring of Bells! Fascinating history and atmosphere and lovely room with a great view right over the gorgeous town square. Reasonable price too as we were there off peak. Loved the pub dogs too, Mossy and Bella, really adds to the genuine spark of the place. In fact we loved it so much we have been back twice in subsequent years!

Room Tip: The one looking out over the town square was great.

Went in on a wet and dreary day and were lucky enough to get the table by the log fire. The food was good and the service was very attentive without being a nuisance. Good value for money and they supply a full range from light snacks to full 3 courses. Very well presented and the food tasted as good as it looked. Suited our mixed group of old and young including 2 vegetarians and we were all well satisfied. £15 a head for 2 courses and a drink is reasonable but not the cheapest in the area, however we will happily return here next time we're in the area.

We booked are room on New Years eve and arrived at 6 p.m.We were shown to our room which was nice( No1) and it faced the garden. The landlady and the bar staff were nice and although we hadn't booked for the evening meal they served us.They had a great band on and the atmosphere was great so we were really pleased until the next day.We went down to breakfast and were shown our table. The table next to us wasn't laid. Another couple and arrived and the lady serving said to us you must have arrived late last night.I said no we arrived at 6.She asked the people to wait outside whist she laid the table and then went to get the couple and we could clearly hear her complaining we had arrived late.,The waitress apparently did not feel well from the night before. We waited sometime before we got our tea and coffee my coffee arrived 10 mins after my patners tea. When our food arrived I had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon my smoked salmon appeared to be in a pool of tepid water and tasted quite strange and my partner said that his bacon was pretty greasy. We left most of it.When we went to pay the landlady the cleaner came up to me and said you be the ones that came late.It was a fairly comical situation that reminded me of a league of gentlemen! In short a mixed experience

Situated in the heart of a lovely Devon village on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park.Ideal for touring and walking, the Ring of Bells is a warm and friendly Inn with four well appointed bedrooms, communal lounge.Breakfasts are really nice home cooked food, evening meal menu is not large but is all locally sourced.Large range of real ales. All in all a really nice friendly place for a quiet break. There is no parking at the Inn itself but there is parking on the road and a Public Carpark about 100metres away.

Room Tip: Front bedrooms overlook village square.

We can strongly recommend this inn. The slight downsides (only very slight) were a well used bar area which takes it's toll on the decor and the light meals at £6.50 are exactly that, light. However the landlady and staff were wonderful and couldn't be more helpful and friendly and our room whilst small was lovely, immaculately clean and cosy and the breakfast was first class. Highly recommended and we would definitely return avoiding the more expensive competitors a few doors along.

Room Tip: Go for the smaller room as it has a better feel and would be warm on the coldest nights.

My wife & I visited this pub on a the off chance but were so glad we did. The pub itself is "Olde Worlde" but clean, bright and friendly. The food was excellent, very reasonably priced and the service was exemplary.
Brilliant!

Room Tip: Didn't stay in the pub - just had lunch.

We quite regularly visit Chagford but are not often able to stay. However we were so glad that we decided to stay at the Ring O'Bells, just a shame we could only stay for 1 night! Had Room number 2 which was comfortable and suited our needs. Good supply of tea/coffee etc & some lovely shortbread! Had a delicious meal on the night we stayed and breakfast the following morning was very tasty indeed. There was live music in the bar on the night of our visit and combined with meeting up with a very good friend of ours who lives and has his business in Chagford, it was a really great night!!! The staff were friendly and we would certainly recommend anyone to stay here. Hopefully we can also do so again one day.

Room Tip: As we have only stayed in Room 2 we can only advise that it was very quiet as it was at the back
