Description: Agaric Restaurant is almost entirely to blame for Ashburtons recent transformation from quiet Devon town to foodie mecca. With local food champion Nick Coiley at the helm, this unassuming, quirky little place combines B B, restaurant and cookery school with simply stunning results. Yes, the dcor is lovely but we cant believe that youll be checking out wallpaper or judging tablecloths when the smells emanating from the kitchen hit you. With pretension and over-styling thrown out of the window Coiley prepares mouthwatering menus using incredible local produce, from wild mushrooms to live crabs, and he does it all from scratch every single day. The results are enough to have critics and fellow chefs calling this place food heaven and wed be fools to disagree.

“Very pleasant evening”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

Decor like an upmarket bistro (to my mind anyway, my wife thought it more like a "proper" restaurant). Cosy with a good log fire and a separate small bar area. Very friendly and helpful staff with a good atmosphere. Evening menu had about 4 starters, 5 mains and 4 desserts plus cheese - enough of a selection - and some guarantee that it is all local and fresh, as they claim. (On their website http://www.agaricrestaurant.co.uk/ they have a sample menu.) The food was very good, fairly rich but sensible portions - ie you can have all three courses without exploding. With cocktails, wine, three courses, coffee and tips it came to £50 per head - and good value overall. There is on-street parking outside, and if that is occupied there is a car-park a very short walk away. We shall be going back.

“Fantastic Food! A Real Treat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012 via mobile

We visited Argaric for our Christmas Party in December and had a brilliant evening!

The food was fantastic, the staff were really friendly and attentive.

There were little extras like some delicious little nibbles while we had drinks and amazing homemade fudge with coffee.

I couldn't fault anything. The atmosphere is relaxed the decor is cosy & warm, it's just a lovely restaurant!

I would highly reccomend Argaric for a special occasion! It's wonderful!

“Food glorious Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

Hi

I had the pleasure of lunch at the Agaric in Ashburton yesterday. And it was a pleasure

Booked a table in advance, this is a good idea, the place is cosy so fills up quickly, also, there is lots of space between tables, so even full its not crowded.

Service, great. Polite but not intrusive. I like this.

Food was from the Christmas menu

I had the twice baked alpine cheese souffle, Amazing. not really sure how to express the taste other than sublime.

my friends had the duck, brill and beef options. Not one complaint in fact every meal was fantastic

Cost, including a shared starter, water, wine and soft drinks was £100

Not bad when you have a happy vegiterian, happy fish lover and two very contented meat lovers.

A perfect lunch

What a find in the lovely Stanery town of Ashburton. Tucked away in North Street. Very welcoming, excellent service with fine food.

“Atmospheric, Ambitious Agaric”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This was our first visit to Ashburton and Agaric but it won't be our last. The chef can cook and from the moment we walked in the door the whole ambience seemed friendly but assured. The relatively small space is cleverly used and the menu shows imagination and ambition. Having opted for the Agaric fish soup - a bouillibase type soup - I chose pheasant for my main course though I was very tempted by the turbot with fennel. My vegetarian husband was well catered for and started with an absolutely delicious double baked souffle. Everything was perfectly cooked and classily presented, without being overly fussy. There is nothing twee about this place and we'll definitely be back for more.
