Booked via Travelzoo as a gourmet dining experience, and bed & breakfast. Not too easy to find when you've forgotten the satnav, but thanks to a very helpful policeman in South Molton we got there by following his directions - thank you, officer, and my wife thought you had nice eyes and smile!
As promised the entrance is right opposite the Portsmouth Arms pub, and we were very impressed by the drive up a narrow winding road through woods to the hotel (wouldn't fancy it on a dark winter's night).
We were greeted by a very pleasant young lady who showed us to our room (Ashreigney, in the old part of the hotel), which looks out onto the green in front of the hotel. As a surprise I'd arranged champagne, flowers, chocolates and strawberries in the room, all of which went down very well. We took a walk round by the tennis court, and were blown away by the view.
The evening started off with canapés & gazpacho in the lounge, then into the dining room: beautifully done, we were sat by a window, several other couples dining there, and our meal was wonderful. Excellent menu, delicious wines to suit the course, excellent service. Very comfortable bed, and good bathroom, as is normal shampoo/shower gel/etc all provided, plus face flannels and 2 lovely towelling bathrobes.
Breakfast was a revelation: fruit juices, cereal, tea, coffee, and the choices for cooked! Well, I went for the full English, but my better half chose the smoked haddock & poached egg - smoked haddock, not dyed! Suffice it to say we didn't need lunch!
Unfair to single out any one staff member as they were all unfailingly polite, friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble - we would have no hesitation in returning, or recommending it to anyone else.
Any complaints - only trivial, but the dead trees in pots by the front door weren't too inspiring.

We stayed last night (21/8/13) and were met by very helpful staff. Dinner was a delightful surprise of excellent quality and professional, unobtrusive service.
We has deal from Secret Escapes but we would go again without a deal!

We booked through Travelzoo and had a suberb deal at 60% off. The staff, room and the food were absolutely faultless. We stayed in the Tavistock Suite which was a very good size and the food was as good as anything we'd ever tasted. The nearest town is South Molton which is around 15 minutes away although theres not much going on here and Barnstaple around 30 minutes but if you want a break from everything Northcote Manor is the perfect place to be.

Our second stay here having been for a weekend on my last 2 birthdays. As before, great service, super staff and food to die for. I like the added touch of the ' happy birthday' in chocolate sauce on my dessert plate! Admittedly we have stayed both times on an offer which provides exceptional value - a lovely room and excellent tasting menu.

Internet and mobile signals are poor at best and nothing to do here but relax, unwind, enjoy the countryside and take time out from the hectic pace of life.

We have also stayed at the sister hotel, Lake Hotel, Brecon, 2 years ago for my 50th. That hotel has a spa to enjoy and provides equally excellent food and accommodation. I would thoroughly recommend both venues

We booked the Travelzoo deal with an upgraded room and tasting menu with matching wine flight. All in all it was great value for money and we had a lovely stay. The hotel is a beautiful old building that could do with a bit of attention and money thrown at it but nothing too terrible. We had a great room "Heron" with fantastic views which was very comfortable. We were served canapés in the drawing room and were able to look at the wine list which was nice. The tasting menu looked like it had been written for us as we loved each course, the dining room was small, intimate and had a nice feel to it. The staff are all very pleasant and served each course at a good leisurely pace. The bread was terrible to be honest but that didn't matter too much as all of the courses were great ! the pre starter and pre dessert were really just an amuse bouche but really nice. The main started of Pate was a bit drab but tasted good. Breakfast was served in the beautiful conservatory and was very good. Well worth the money we paid, very nice service and a good night away in a peaceful location.

Room Tip: Worth the upgrade

An anniversary break to the Northcote Manor was a lovely surprise. Our suite was spacious, with lovely views, a comfortable bed and the quickest filling bath I've ever had. Staff were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The gourmet menu was delicious and the wines were nicely paired. There were nice touches such as fresh milk for the tea tray on request, water in the room, and full sized toiletries. If you are looking for a relaxed and elegant country break this could be for you.
