“A lovely stay at a price”

We stayed here in May 2005 for my birthday. On arrival, we were collected in the Landrover and transported across the sands to Burgh Island. We were a little early, but the staff made the effort to make our room available straight away which was nice. We stayed in Fruity Metcalfe which is on the top floor overlooking the beach and mainland. The bathroom is almost as big as the bedroom and newly refurbished with underfloor heating. it has great views too! quite a large but narrow balcony, interconnecting with the room next door.
we had lunch at the pub (also owned by the hotel) and then walked around the island and played croquet. the "swimming pool" which is a rock pool did not look too inviting despite the warm weather. we also played snooker and understand that they are about to install a small gym in the games room.
we had cocktails in the gorgeous 1930s bar and thoroughly enjoyed our meal in the spacious dining room whilst a 2 piece band played. we danced to their music later in the evening. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss - some of the staff seem to understand very little english, but we got by. the buffet table selection was not vast, but the cooked breakfast was good.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at Burgh Island but found it to be an expensive night (£400) overall.

“A 1930's Ocean Liner on an Island”

What a fantastic place! We were lucky enough to have two of the loveliest English summer days to enjoy the sea views and take in the beautiful Devon coastline from the privileged position of a private island.

Far from being disappointed with the decor, the place is awash with original Art Deco features and furniture. It seems every effort has been made to restore where possible, and to preserve the character. It was nice to see the owners have restored the croquet lawn and it appears restoration of the exterior is ongoing.

The bathroom of our room, "Jessie Matthews", had been newly refurbished with a white Art Deco reproduction suite, but it was pure, opulent luxury with chrome fittings, black marble tiles and underfloor heating! The bedroom had been re-decorated and newly carpeted. It was furnished with an original, if a little worn, 1930's bedroom suite and a good-sized balcony with amazing sea views.

The staff were friendly and service was descreet and attentive.

I agree with another reviewer that those expecting a modern, sleek hotel (with televison!) would not appreciate the unique character that Burgh Island offers. I for one, will return for afternoon tea on the lawn, to wear evening dress for dinner and to walk the island's paths and pretend it's mine!

“Burgh Island transports you back to the art deco charm of the 1930's”

I took a party of twelve people to Burgh Island to celebrate my 40th birthday - We dressed up in 1930's costume and had a marvelous time on the island. The building just oozes art deco charm and the architecture is suberb. The food was also suberb and with an excellent wine cellar there was copious amounts of decent wine and chapagne to drink. We were entertained by a brilliant jazz band playing 1920's and 1930's music including Charleston's and the Tango. The night finished with a ride back to the mainland on the famous sea tractor - The stars and the moon shining and refecting on the water below. While the vast 1930's 'ship' of a hotel was illuminated by the full moon - a truely magical spectacle.

Very highly reccommended for a top notch evening of fun and frolicks al la Agatha Christie and Noel Coward!

“Whatever next? ”

Easily, the most magical thing about Burgh Island is the climb to the summit, enjoyed by thousands over the last century. Now the owners have closed the footpaths. How dare they deprive us ? Now the locals say that the ancient (1336) Pilchard Inn is next. Watch out all you lovers of this beautiful place.

Burgh Island is a private island and has always been so. We have allowed limited numbers of locals the privilidge of walking to the top of the island - but there is no right of way to do so. It would be a shame if local vindictive elements who have no interest is the sustainability or beauty of this area forced us to take a more extreme position. We do not wish to engage in this debate with you, which is of no interest to genuine TripAdvisor viewers or our hotel guest.

As a guest of ours here, you have the priviledge of coming to a private and protected place with unsurpassed views and wildlife. Our business is concerned with nurturing and supporting this area of outstanding natural beauty.

“Valentines Day Hell ..........”

We also spent Valentines Weekend at Burgh Island Hotel.
Worst weekend I have ever spent at any hotel anywhere.
A word of advice....do not book the hotels' specially marketed Apartment 25. It's actually situated on the mainland opposite the island - the hotel markets the property as a best of both worlds where you can have the independance and space of an apartment whilst enjoying all the facilities of the hotel. Sounds great doesn't it ? the only thing they neglect to tell you is that you can't actually get to the hotel if the weather is bad, as their sea tractor cannot be used in bad weather to ferry you to the hotel - a fact maybe we should have been told at time of booking. So we were stranded and didn't really get to enjoy the hotels facilities and the "best of both worlds" their website gushes about. This happened over a 2 night stay in February for valentines and because of this fact our weekend was ruined. We wouldhave had a better time at home. We've stayed in alot of hotels around the world and I honestly say we have never stayed in a hotel run by a load of complete amateurs. If you do go to Burgh Island, and something goes wrong or you are not happy with any aspect of your stay then don't waste your time complaining, as you will be ignored. Or even better, don't bother going ! 3 weeks on, 4 phone calls, 1 email and 1 letter later, we're still waiting to communicate with the owner of the hotel !!! she's disappeared with our money !!! ....Burgh Island.....more like Fawlty Towers !!!
