We stayed here in May 2005 for my birthday. On arrival, we were collected in the Landrover and transported across the sands to Burgh Island. We were a little early, but the staff made the effort to make our room available straight away which was nice. We stayed in Fruity Metcalfe which is on the top floor overlooking the beach and mainland. The bathroom is almost as big as the bedroom and newly refurbished with underfloor heating. it has great views too! quite a large but narrow balcony, interconnecting with the room next door.
we had lunch at the pub (also owned by the hotel) and then walked around the island and played croquet. the "swimming pool" which is a rock pool did not look too inviting despite the warm weather. we also played snooker and understand that they are about to install a small gym in the games room.
we had cocktails in the gorgeous 1930s bar and thoroughly enjoyed our meal in the spacious dining room whilst a 2 piece band played. we danced to their music later in the evening. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss - some of the staff seem to understand very little english, but we got by. the buffet table selection was not vast, but the cooked breakfast was good.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay at Burgh Island but found it to be an expensive night (£400) overall.
