“As Good as Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

This is our 5th or 6th visit to this hotel. I have to say that I never been let down in any way.We were in a re-furbished room overlooking the lovely coastline, which was large and very comfortable. All the staff are very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble and the food is a delight. The menu was very varied and beautifully cooked and presented.Just about to book again for 2 nights in January.Highly recommended.

A couple of nights here when the partner hotel in Barnstaple was full. A magnificent setting should be the site of an upmarket, modern hotel complex but one gets the feeling of a retirement home! The premium rooms looking over the sea are superb but the 'old wing' room I had had a view of a flat roof and no horizon was small and very downmarket.

The full room rate makes your eyes water even in London!

Room Tip: Overlooking the sea is the way to go!

The staff was very accommodating. We had a room with a view of the sea and it was a gorgeous view. I wish it had a balcony like the single room that my mother stayed in though. There was plenty of space in our room for laying out our luggage even with the cot for our baby in there, and a big closet too. The food was delicious. My only complaint was that our king size bed was really two singles pushed together, the middle of the bed was a zone you wanted to avoid.

All the staff offered great service and a very warm welcome. Nothing was too much trouble.

We had some great days - Saunton offers something for everyone.
- Walking / playing on the beach even in the miserable weather was enjoyed by all, as long as you wrap up well. Indulging in many posh hot chocolates from Sands Cafe to warm up on the way back to the hotel.
- The children enjoyed many hours in the hotel pool.
- We had a good walk to the neighbouring village walking over the hill top through fields and back via the coastal path. Some fantastic views to capture.
- And spent time simply relaxing in the hotel - they do some lovely sandwiches & scones.

It was then nice to dress up for dinner. All the food was lovely, although when staying dinner, bed & breakfast for 5 nights, it would have been better if the menu options varied more each day, but we solved this by going out to Sands Cafe one evening for a simple, but very tasty spag bol. The burgers and fish&chips also look good. Also, we found that the chef was willing to vary the meals slightly when asked. Allowing you to choose from the lounge menu if requested.

It was my first time at Saunton Sands, but definitely not the last - I hope to return many times.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room - its a fantastic view! Just ask if you want to vary the dinner menu, they...

We visited this hotel for many years when I was a child/teenager but hadn't been for a long time. Chose this hotel to celebrate several big family events this year and we weren't disappointed. We received a warm welcome from the doorman then reception staff, our luggage was swiftly taken to our family suite which was very clean and well equipped. The views stunning. The beach is fantastic for all, our kids loved playing there everyday, their grandparents enjoyed a walk followed by hot chocolate in the sands cafe bar. The hotel facilities are great too, apart from some of the adults going for a walk one day we never left the hotel. The food is excellent and the restaurant and bar staff very friendly and attentive; my only criticism is the menu is not varied enough when staying for more than a couple of nights (they did used to change the menu on a daily basis years ago!). We did eat in the sands cafe bar down by the beach one evening which was a nice alternative. Looking forward to returning.

Room Tip: Choose sea facing. Top floor rooms are quieter.

Had done a lot of research on tripadviser so knew what to expect. Overall we were happy and it met expectations. If we had just turned up unprepared we would've been a touch disappointed.

We booked an apartment. The foyer of the hotel is impressive and looked every bit 4*. The apartment was not 4* not that you could determine this from the website. The printed blurb in the hotel clearly states 3* but you'd never guess that if you did everything on line.

Having said that the big issue with the apartment was the 60's style wall paper and tired carpets. Everything else was fine if a little dated. Mostly clean but there was a lot of dust in places. The heating was a bit of a mystery, seemed to be on a timer ie not on all the time. Despite that the cost was more than reasonable. The views were stunning. We were very happy in it and met all our needs.

The facilities in the hotel were excellent be that the pool, gym, lounges etc. the attitude of all staff was excellent. Very helpful and engaging. The kids activity were well thought out and entertaining. This all smacked of 4* if maybe a bit more.

The food was excellent, well presented and freshly prepared. Only minor quibble was the overall impression was slightly let down by final execution. We had tea and coffee in the lounge. It was brought on a tray fresh from an old motorway service stop. I expected the cups, pots etc to be neatly laid out on the table. Instead the tray was simply placed on the table. It was similar when we had lunch. All beautifully presented except we had no side plates to butter our bread. The butter came individually wrapped. Just looked cheap when everything else looked so good.

Overall we were happy, will return and would recommend. It was also good value.

This feels like a business trying to do the right things and do care about what they are doing. Credit should be given for this. Just need to focus in hard on the detail and put the * ratings for the apartments on line.

Arrived for a six night stay, in a family suite. When arrived the rooms were not clean. 2 deep, 2 normal cleans later (over a 3 day period) still not correct. Attitude not great. 1 night’s credit was given, but as I said at the time I would rather have had a clean room and not had the cleaners in an extra 4 time’s.
The rooms were small and very tired.
The hotel needs urgent upgrading; it is stuck in a 1980’s time warp. Customer expectations have changed since then but unfortunately this hotel has not.
The food is good. But the menu in the main restaurant is the same each evening (apart from changing the soup and roast/meat). So if you are there for as long as we were the choice halfway through the holiday is very limited. They say we have 2 other food outlets, 1 was closed on some of the nights we were there and the other is a terrace lounge where if you want to eat in tee shirts and shorts in the evening then that’s the place to go! (But don’t expect to leave quickly as the service is slow) and the menu's there do not change at all.
When in the restaurant, everything that was ordered as an extra, food or drinks I had to sign for everything as they were ordered. This was very irritating.
Staff on the whole were pleasant enough but it took the youngest and the oldest waiters in the restaurant to show how proper customer interaction should be done.
Plus point was the location – excellent.
I stay in hotels for over 120 nights per year the world over, and believe me when I say this, this hotel is unique!
If you want a holiday hotel that is in a time warp, and are not worried about food choice, and sloppy housekeeping then this is for you.

Thank you for your recent review and I am very sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations.

I have discussed in great length with the housekeeping department your observations regarding the cleanliness of your room.

The hotel has a continual refurbishment programme, including bedrooms, public areas and leisure facilities and I am sorry that you felt that this was not evident.

May I apologise if you felt our dinning options were limited, however I feel that the menu has a varied seasonal selection of dishes and offers over fourteen different main courses on a nightly basis.

On a positive note I am very pleased that our location met with your satisfaction.

Once again thank you for reviewing the Saunton Sands Hotel and I hope we have the opportunity of welcoming you back in the near future.
