We go for walking holidays on Guernsey every few years. We chose the Imperial because it is perfectly placed at the western end of the south coast coastal path.
We had a second floor room with an excellent sea view. The room was not perfectly clean on arrival, but as we were early, possibly cleaning had been hurried to accommodate us. The room was adequately equipped although the shower plumbing was overdue for attention. The most obvious shortcoming was that although the room was tidied daily, it was not swept or vacuumed during our stay. Some polystyrene fragments in the cupboard were dislodged by our cases when we arrived, and remained an undisturbed floor decoration until we left. It would probably have been swept if we had complained, but I had a manager’s curiosity to see when the appropriate system would pick up the omission. Replenishment of the courteousy tray was overlooked a couple of times.
Unfortunately the stair carpet and the second floor landing carpets were fairly spectacularly stained giving a poor impression on the approach to the room. The room carpet itself was, however, OK. The chair in the room had a torn seat cover, but oddly there were three otherwise identical chairs in the hallway outside in good order. Why?
We were on half board. Our table had a lovely view over the bay. The food was generally good, always generous, and occasionally excellent. A couple of times it failed (particularly the vegetable curry!), but overall the table d’hôte menu was very good value for money. Table service was charming, unfailingly courteous and helpful.
Generally we had a pleasant stay, marred somewhat by lack of sufficient room management. If that can be ramped up with proper self evaluation and checking systems, this hotel should be able to exceed the expectations of its star rating.
