I've been dining here, off and on, since 1984. Nello Ciotti was the original owner with Tim Vidamour (still there) as the chef. Following a refurbishment the restaurant continues to provide great fare and you will probably never get a bad dinner.
However, Nello (principle who was always ready to great you each evening) has left to enjoy a well earned retirement and he is a hard act to follow. What has happened is that the staff have moved up to fill his shoes, and it feels just like that.
The cusine is Tim all over, but it is safe and therefore not startling. Many dishes remain unchanged in nearly 30 years. Its the sort of place that does well from safe business lunches and the older crowd in the evening. A safe cash flow probably protects it from moving forwards.
Its been over taken in its time by local nearby restaurants who have aspired to take its mantle and are more in tune with what we like today.
Da Nello's is like a comfortable old overcoat, full of fond memories, warm and safe but not something that you want to have on that special evening out. What is important to note is that it is not beyond regaining its former glory, but it does need to be more in touch and try taking a few big steps.
