“Our long weekend stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

We stayed 3 nights at La Barbarie in a standard room, my husband who booked the trip was a little dissapointed with the dated decoration becuase the rooms on the website are obviously the new superior rooms. Our standard room was very spacey and well equipped. I agree the shower over the bath wasn't used due to a lack in water pressure which also took the bath an age to fill but there was always plenty of hot water and fresh towels.
We ate in the restaurant the first night and was very impressed with the attention to detail and the quality of evening food.
The full Guernsey breakfast was a little dissappointing considering it was nearly £11, it was a little on the small side, the bacon was only just cooked, we like the fat to be crispy and the beans looked a little dry, like they'd been waiting on the plate 15 mins before anything else was added.

I would agree with the 3* AA rating for this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose the superior rooms. Avoid rooms in the old part of the building.

What a lovely hotel, we were lucky with the weather as well. We could find no fault with the hotel or staff who were always friendly and helpful. My sister had the standard room which for a single person was brilliant and roomy, we had one of the superior new rooms, large bathroom and bedroom with a 'dressing room' in between. Cannot wait to visit again.

Room Tip: Choose the superior room, peaceful and with plenty of space.

We stayed 1 night at La Barbarie in a standard room. This was perfectly adequate if a little old fashioned - everything in good condition but rather dated in style. From the photos it appears the superior room are totally different in style. The bathroom was fine, but the shower over the bath was weak though a good temperature - perhaps we had been spoilt by the power shower in the Braye Beach Hotel on Alderney, the previous 2 nights! If we had been staying longer it would have been worth upgrading to the superior room.
The hotel was attractive from the outside with a nice looking pool (sadly we had bad weather) and garden with plenty of parking, but the best feature was the restaurant. This is obviously renowned as on the Saturday night we were staying, the bar area was full of pre-dinner guests and buzzing. Separate review to follow in the Restaurant section, re our dinner which was excellent. Breakfast for us was an early hurried one, in order to catch a flight out, but there seemed to be a good selection of hot dishes, pastries, cereals etc.
It is definitely worth staying here, if only for the restaurant.

Room Tip: Opt for superior if you're staying longer than a night, unless they get the standard rooms redec...

This was our third stay, again booked last minute which entailed switching to a new Superior Room for the last two nights of our weeks stay. This was a real treat where no detail had been missed. The food again was first class and even with my odd dietary requests nothing was too much trouble. All staff from reception, bar, restaurant and room maids were all friendly and obviously enjoy and take pride in their work.

We stayed at La Barbarie for a mini break of four nights on the recommendation of family members. We were not disappointed. A most relaxing ambience, along with first clas food and a genuinely caring and professional staff ensure a really stress busting experience. The standard room we had was perfectly adequate, well furnished and spotlessly clean. Perhaps a little more storage space would help, but the specification was superb, with plentiful supplies of tea and coffee, good toiletries and ironing board / trouser press.
The food could not be faulted and it is difficult to know how it could be improved. Breakfast has an amazing choice of dishes and Table d'hote dinner menus are different each evening and have a choice of four options in each section.
Buses stop on the nearby corner and connect with St Peter Port and other areas of the island. Walks are breathtaking and easy to reach from the hotel. Without exception staff are friendly courteous and helpful.
We recommend La Barberie very highly for a relaxing and welcoming stay on the beautiful island of Guernsey.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are fine, although superior rooms are available and would presumably be evn larger an...

Location: St. Martins, around 10 minutes by taxi from the Airport

Hotel: small, nice, pleasant and calm hotel with no children, no crowds and with very nice and helpful staff.

Surrounding: St. Martins is a very small town, La Barbarie hotel is in the side street. Around 10 minutes by foot, you find a nice bay. At the corner of the street, there´s a bus stop to the town and also to St. Peter Port.

Rent a car: You can rent a car directly in the hotel. Driving in Guernsey is a little hectic. There are very narrow roads, no signs and you drive ofcourse on the left side. We din´t drive in UK before, but when you drive slowly and carefully, you don´t need to have a fear. You can see whole island by car and definitely, you should rent it. We had a car from Europcar (Ford Ka, 70 EUR/2 days, full insurance).

Accomodation: is nice, clean and pleasant.

Breakfast: buffet style. There´s cold buffet wit cereals, cheese and ham and then you can order hot, typicall English breakfast.

Food: there is a very good restaurant. We had a la carte menu and the food was very good and tasty.

Drinks: you can have drinks in the restaurant or in the bar. The bar is very nice and pleasant.

Services: restaurant, bar, pool, garden,

Staff: very nice and helpful everywhere - at the reception, in the restaurant and also in the bar

Advantages of this hotel:
- lovely garden with nice pool
- comfortable and nice accomodation
- very good service and attitude of the staff
- romantic and quite hotel without a lot of tourists
- very good restaurant and bar

Disadvantages of this hotel:
- you need a car to really enjoy your holiday in Guernsey

What you can do there:
- swimming - pool
- trips
