This was a 60th birthday treat in June 2006, for 12 nights. I've been
meaning to write the review ever since. What a gem of a hotel. We stayed in one of their apartments, Just 2 of us so there was plenty of room. A large separate sitting room incorporated with the kitchen.
There are 2 bedroom & 1 bedroom apartments. The first 5 days we had very poor weather, so it was nice that we could just "chill out" in the apartment and make our own tea & coffee etc. Outside was an area to have drinks from the bar, near the swimming pool, which we did on several occasions before and after dinner. The food was divine, the service efficient and friendly. The restaurant is renowned as one of Guernsey's best. The prices were very reasonable for such a fine restaurant. Usually for 2 courses and a couple of glasses of wine it worked out at about £35 for 2. We did try a couple of other places for a meal just for a change, but nothing came up to La Barbarie standards.
We didn't use the swimming pool, but there were comfortable sun-beds for those who wanted to sunbathe. Beds very comfy. Rooms very quiet, you can be assured of a good nights sleep. Decor rather "old english", but all very clean and relaxing. If you are looking for a lively holiday, then Guernsey won't be for you. If you enjoy spectacular views, good walks, usually ending with hidden little tea-shops to relax and enjoy the views, then this is the place for you.
We hired a car for the 12 days, but many people used the excellent bus service. The bus stopped very regularly right outside the hotel. Guernsey is quite small it's easy to drive right round the island in one day with a couple of stops. St Peter Port is interesting and has a very continental feel to it
The highlight of our holiday were the visits to Herm and Sark. To visit these islands you need to book in advance at the height of the season as we very nearly didn't get on the boat to Sark when we turned up first thing in the morning. We were 3rd on the waiting list, fortunately we made it on. For bird watchers, if you look on the RSPB web-site there is an evening Puffin Watch boat trip to Herm.
We were going to do this but unfortunately the weather was too bad that evening
To describe these Herm & Sark is very difficult.
Herm was about a 25mins boat trip away, but it really is a different world. Most of the day trippers made straight for the little village.
We decided to turn right off the boat and walk around the island first. (We like to be different!!) The weather was perfect. As we walked along the cliffs we suddenly saw about 6 dolphins below us playing in the water. A real thrill, we were completely alone .We sat on a grassy hillock and watched them for at least 30 mins before they swam off. After about another 30mins we came upon a magnificent horseshoe shaped bay with golden sands and a little beach cafe where for £1 each we hired a deckchair and sat for a good 3 hours. Reluctantly we decided to carry on with our walk and came to the famous shell beach, mostly made up of crushed shells and quite exposed. If you do go to Herm, try and make for the other beach, it was wonderful and ideal for children. We continued our walk to the village where we just had time for a bite to eat before catching the last boat back. An idyllic island. Rather like a Carribean Island in the middle of the English Channel. BUT you need good weather to enjoy it to the full.
Sark was very different, but equally, if not more, spectacular. The boat trip we thought was quite expensive, but I think it took about 1 hour. We walked up to the village and then decided as it's a fair-sized island to take a horsedrawn carriage to get a feel of the islands geography. A week spent on this island would be very relaxing, more to see & do than on Herm, but very steep walks down to the few beaches. You would have to be quite fit to walk back up. It was lovely to visit 2 islands where cars are not allowed. If I was
only going to visit one of these islands, I think it would have to be Herm. I brought a book from the village all about the owners of the island and still enjoy reading it. It has quite a history.
All in all a very memorable 12 days
