“Good Staff”

Le Friquet Country Hotel

Save Review
4 of 5 stars
Shropshire
Jun 23, 2008

We stayed at the Hotel in early June, as part of our first trip to Guernsey. The hotel arranged the whole booking, including the ferry and managed to get us a discount.

We requested adjacent rooms and were given them, overlooking the garden and all went right with the bookings and our requests.

The rooms were well decorated and clean with good attention to detail. The bathrooms seemed to have been relatively recently refurbished and were bright and white.

The food was generally good but we would recommend avoiding the early menu which had less choice. Go after 6.30 and try the in house specialities, in particular the mixed starter, but you may want to share it with someone.

One of the main assets of the hotel is its staff, who are all very helpful and friendly and made it a good break.

The hotel is in the middle of the island so best to take or hire a car. The island isn't large but you do find yourself wanting to visit some places for a second time and the freedom helps, plus petrol is17.5% cheaper there. The hotel has ample parking.

We, being a 50 year old and a 49 year old, took my 84 year old mother on holiday and wondered if we had chosen a hotel for her rather than us. We were amongst the youngest there at the time and my mother was about the oldest, but the relative quiet that this brought was a nice change from the hustle and bustle of some hotels.

What can I say, each to their own, but we would be very happy to return to both the island and the hotel.

“Could be great - but is pretty grim.”

Le Friquet Country Hotel

May 31, 2008

First of all, I must say that our stay was purchased as part of deal so we got a good price. However, that reduced price we paid probably reflects a fair amount for the overall experience.

My overall impression is that the hotel has a regular base of customers in their 50s - 60s who like the traditional atmosphere. The Hotel management were notable by their absence and perhaps the owners have given up making an effort to keep standards high.

Here is my full review

This hotel looked promising as we drove in - nice gardens, clean outdoor swimming pool and flowers everywhere in the gardens.

Inside the hotel the reception area was average but the restaurant, bar area and dining room lacked any atmosphere at all. Most of the residents appeared to be in 50+ and there was nothing to show that the hotel management were trying to appeal to a younger clientele.

Staff were pleasant but for most of them English was a 2nd language and not very well spoken. This gave the impression that the staff were not very hospitable. There was one guy, who may have been a manager of some sort, who appeared to be local and was very helpful.

The bedroom was pretty bad - on the 2nd floor and up the windy stairs that other reviewers have mentioned. Outside the temperature was about 16C but our room never dropped below 25C. Even during the night we had to keep the noisy in-room air conditioner switched on. The room decor was dated and the room was cramped, but we did have a modernised bathroom which matched any 4 star hotel. Only thing was that the ceiling sloped through the corner bath unit so we had to kneel in the bath to take a shower. Bizarre.

The dining room offer "fresh fish specials which change every day" - but they didn't! There was a Carvery for £7.50 with 3 meats every night. It was an average carvery I guess but far too sloppy and under/over cooked and most nights they ran out of a main ingredient before 8pm. Strange to have a carvery where they run out of the main meat, or the yorkshire puddings on 'beef day'.

Breakfast was the highlight with a good selection of cereals, juices, bread, danish pastries, fruit, yoghurt and a good selection of hot options including a full english breakfast.

I won't be going back - but I know that others (of a certain age) will.

“very dissapointed”

Le Friquet Country Hotel

Apr 24, 2008

My girlfriend and I visited Le Friquet when visiting for a friends wedding. The first thing we noticed was that the hotel is really in the middle of the island and not near the beaches or the town, a couple of minutes walk do get you to an infrequent bus service, however expensive taxi fares were required if you are going out for an evening dinner.

The hotel looks nice from the outside, but I think as we are in our 20's they assumed we would be happy to navigate the 3 stories of narrow stairs and be furthest room away from the entrance. The residents were of retirement age and seemed to be having an OK time. the room had an en-suite bathroom which was fine, but the room had mould on the walls and was in desperate need of re-decoration, we looked in some of the other rooms when we decided to ask for another room, but they looked equally as bad so we decided better the devil you know.

When we booked the hotel we asked for the half board option as the food had been reviewed well, and the carvery did look good, however due to an administrative error, we were not given our half board status even though it was printed on all our documentation, the young deputy manager admitted he had made a mistake, but refused to apologise and was very defensive of his policy over price rather than customer service, he refused to do anything about the situation and we were forced to either pay extra for the meal we had just ordered or leave. given the terrible atmosphere in the restaurant we booked a taxi and went to a pub down the road for a good meal. breakfasts were OK but the staff were really non communicative so it was not a memorable occasion.

the lady on reception the following day after our issue with the deputy manager did apologise and offered to pay £10 towards our inconvenience, however this was too little too late. The groomed garden is a nice garden, but you visit Guernsey to see the island so it is wasted space, the pool is OK though.

Overall this was a very poor experience, this hotel is not cheap so we thought we would sacrifice a hotel by the coast for superior quality rooms and food, however this was a big mistake, this hotel is stranded in the middle of a small island and remarkably far from anywhere, the staff are not very friendly and the rooms have damp patches. if this is what you like on a holiday them I can recommend this hotel 100%

Also if you are a couple or young family, avoid due to the location and quality, if you are elderly avoid due to the narrow and steep stairs.

“The staff made the differance”

Le Friquet Country Hotel

Apr 7, 2008

We only went for a short break and were attracted by an ad we saw featuring a Seafood platter as part of the package. We had a very relaxing and pleasant stay. Guernsey is a very interesting place with plenty to see and do.
We travel a lot and mainly in Large corporate type of Hotels. This is a small privately run Hotel with staff who really made the differance. None of the standard questions that you get from the large " well trained" Hotel staff ,but just genuine friendly and helpfull staff. The Seafood was stunning. Rooms clean and well furnished. I think the place will look great in the summer as it has large grounds but it was all a bit too early to see the flowers/ trees etc

The only negative was the acess out of the Hotel onto the road which we found alittle tight. Roads in Guernsey are small ! !

“Nice place, shame about the faces!”

Le Friquet Country Hotel

Why do people work in hospitality if they are not hospitable?! The reception staff at this place takes my prize for the most miserable I've ever had the misfortune to be 'served' by. What price a smile, guys? Or how about a few cheery words when we book in or out? We stayed for 3 nights in the conservatory room which was nice enough, the food was ok although certainly nothing special but the place was really spoiled by the lack of atmosphere or conviviality. A couple of exceptions: Patricia at breakfast was really lovely and Pascal in the evening made a real effort. Also the chap who seemed to be overseeing things was pleasant too. The day after leaving Le Friquet we stayed at Brandon Hall in Coventry - chalk and cheese they are. Now there is real hospitality for you (see my review). Maybe the reception staff from Le Friquet need a trip over there to see how it can be done and what a difference it can make to have great staff in a hotel. Smile, you lot! It might never happen!!
