Owner description: Founded in 1959 by author and naturalist Gerald Durrell, Durrell Wildlife Park was officially renamed in his honour in 2006, having previously been known as 'Jersey Zoo'. It's 32 acres of beautifully landscaped park and farm lands are home to over 130 species of animal, many of which are endangered or vulnerable in the wild. The park serves as a sanctuary, captive breeding and research centre, and is the 'base' for Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust's worldwide efforts to save species from extinction. The onsite facilities include a YHA accredited hostel, luxury 'wildlife camp' and Durrell Conservation Academy - which to date has trained over 3,500 conservationists from 135 countries.

“A World Leader”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

Durrell is one of my favourite places. The history of Gerald Durrell and what he has achieved is marvellous and has been taken on by his wife Lee and the trust. Saving species and rehabiting them into their natural environment all over the world. May seem expensive but definitely worth visiting. Best to take a picnic and enjoy the grounds.

“Excellent day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

A visit to Jersey is not complete without a visit to the Park - interesting to all ages and covering such a wide diversity of animals. Wheelchair and pushchair friendly and also has mobility scooters. There are guided tours for anyone needing these. Amazing experience for the whole family.

“feed the gorillas”

Weak tea and over priced pastries. Basic tea at town centre prices, then the exit from durrell is place to force you through firefly and shop before you leave.

“Extra care for the young at heart.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

I took my 86-year-old mum for a visit. Our guide, Judith, drove us around in a dodo buggy and spotted all the best sights for us. Her care and patience was phenominal. My mum and I enjoyed every minute and she had lots to tell when I took her back to the care home. Judith is a 5* guide in a wonderful park.

“Excellent conservation experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

Any visit to Jersey probably ought to include this park, but beware: it is not a zoo as many might understand the word. Durell exists to aid the conservation of endangered species and the welfare of the animals has a higher priority than visitor attraction.
Having said that my wife and I came away thoroughly satisfied with a well thought out park with plenty to see and informative signage. Also staff who were very knowledgeable and happy to talk about the animals with us when we met them.
It is true that you may well not manage to see all the animals: they also like a bit of privacy! There is no point my saying all the positive things others have said - we thought it all excellent value for money.
