Stayed here for three nights at the end of a holiday. The hotel looked disappointing from the outside (the fact that it was raining didn't help) but things definitely looked up when we were inside.
Good points: food in the restaurants was pretty good, creche was excellent (even changed nappies when necessary!) and the swimming complex was nearly perfect (bigger changing room would help though). Room was OK, could have done with a refurb on the 1970s bathroom (shag pile toilet seat covers??!) and toilet itself wandered around because it wasn't screwed down properly.
Only bad points - reception staff in some cases could have been a bit more proactive- we got lost looking for our room as no-one told us which direction to head in, also we asked if we could have a later check-out if possible and the receptionist didn't seem to want to put herself out by actually being helpful. Generally though, would definitely return!

  • Liked — Food, Creche and Leisure facilities
  • Disliked — Reception staff training and 1970s toilet seat cover

a very welcoming friendly hotel with exceptional staff and management team who are one big 'happy family' - couldn't have wished for a nicer hotel to celebrate our 'silver wedding anniversary' - this was our second trip (and by no means our last to the merton hotel) - our first for my parents 'golden wedding anniversary' in 2000 and the quality of the food and everything was exceptional then too - incidentally my parents also had their 'honeymoon there in july 1950 so that says something too !!

We were a family party of 14 people ranging in age from 8 to 77, staying a week at the end of July at the Merton Hotel; we found it excellent for all of us.

Rooms. The double rooms were compact, but worked and had plenty of storage space; the triple rooms were all right and the family suites were good. The lighting was good for reading, and the bathrooms small but adequate. Soap and tissues are provided, otherwise bring your own toiletries.

Food. The buffet breakfasts in the Belvedere restaurant worked well; food was replenished in good time and little time was spent waiting for other people to serve themselves. Similarly with the dinners there, which offered a wide range of different dishes of a very high standard. The tables here, and in Bonetti’s where the food was also good, were well spaced. And the service in both was prompt, friendly and helpful. But our party found the food in Jersey Joe’s disappointing; perhaps the hotel has taken the American diner concept too far.

Bar/lounge. Generally there was plenty of space, in spite of the poor weather, and the service was fine.

Leisure facilities. The Aquadome was much enjoyed by the younger members of the group. We did not make much use of the other leisure facilities so cannot comment.

Niggles. Ninepence a minute is expensive for internet access; many hotels provide it free. It would have been nice if some of the rolls at breakfast had been crustier, or brown, or if there were some of both.

We found the Merton Hotel to be one of the best Hotels we have stayed in for ages. It was a reasonable price (booked via Laterooms.com about a month before) and the hotel was of a very high standard. It was centrally located, a 10 minute walk through a park to St Helier, but with plenty of parking. The hotel pool is excellent and with a nice patio area with cafe / bar - so nice to grab a beer and snack next to the pool. The Gym was well equipped - although bring some headphones so you can hear the TV !

The rooms (we had a double, with a distant view of the sea), were recently refurbished, clean and the bed comfortable. All the restaurants and communal areas were smart, with comfortable seating areas and decor. The food in the restaurant was a little bland - but fairly good. The breakfasts were excellent - plenty of choice and the hotel newspaper each morning was a nice touch - giving details of the forthcoming hotel events and tips on places to visit on the island.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful and cannot fault the hotel - great value, well maintained - would recommend to all.

From start to finish this was the best holiday we have ever had (so far). The hotel was amazing apart from the bedrooms which were a little out dated. The food (we went half board) was second to none, even my son who is a very fussy eater left satisfied every night and felt very grown up being able to get his own food. The staff were always very friendly and the cleaning staff did a wonderful job on the bedrooms every day. The hotel made you feel that you were in another world. I would recommend this hotel to anyone both young and old (as long as you don't mind children running around having fun!!!) Which some people seem to but I think it makes a holiday a holiday seeing them having fun and enjoying themselves.

  • Liked — How wonderful the hotel was.
  • Disliked — The bedroom decor which was a bit old-fashioned
