Description: This is the cooking that chef Sudu learned as a child. Armed with his mother's homemade spices (she sends them over every two to three weeks) Sudu set to work, introducing a slice of Sri Lanka, and the cuisine he loves, to foodies around the island. The authentic decor - a team effort, which both Sudu and his partner worked hard to create, sets the backdrop for his first big adventure - Unawatuna - an original name to represent the unique cuisine.

“Very tasty & good value!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2014

Wow! We had an excellent meal here and couldn't fault it. The staff were very good, giving suggestions as to what accompaniments would go with the dishes we chose, as we had never tried Sri Lankan food before.
I had one of the specials ‘surf n turf’ curry which had more meat in it than I could eat and king prawns which were cooked well. My husband had the ‘Kukul Mas’ spicy marinated chicken curry and asked for it extra spicy, which he loved! The flavours were amazing. We tried the fresh coconut salad on recommendation and it went really well with our dishes. We also tried the Roti which came with a refreshing mint yogurt style dip. We just couldn't eat it all, good sized portions!
Overall we really enjoyed our meal and would definitely return if we go back to Jersey.

“tasty, casual food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2014

This is in a prime location at the Weighbridge so you go in thinking it might be pricey but it's great value. What's also nice is that as well as having a conventional main course, you can instead order small portions of two or three dishes, giving you a great sampling of the restaurant style- which is simple and tasty rather than gourmet. Food is moderately spicy and sauces are light. Wine mark up isn't overdone. Attentive staff who do a good job at explaining the dishes. Attractive premises and lively atmosphere.

“Superb food and good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

Haven't tried Sri. Lankan food before but loved it. Two of us went for the £15p.p menu. You get three good sized main courses of your choice, rice each & some mini roti and raita. We he'd r
The fish, chickpea and beef curries form the mains. All really tasty and tender.
Very good but not overly noticeable service.
A very pleasant location to sit outside on a warm evening.
Would definitely come back for more.

“So tasty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

Visited sunny Thu evening. Booked table, good we did. Food so tasty, the Sri Lankan cuisine is somewhere between Indian and Thai . Had ribs for starter,. Wow, they would have been enough, but had surf and turf as well. Don't normally go for beef, but I am glad I did, it was so tender and the flavours of spices so delicate and loads of prawns...Service very good. Glad they had break between courses. I think you enjoy more, when you can just sit and not to be rushed. The ?manager was absolutely fab and on the ball and ever so friendly and polite. Regards to the chef, brilliant. Thank you.Definitely go back again.

“Excellent evening, maybe cook a bit more quickly please”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

I figured we were off to a reasonable start because we chose to dine at Unawatuna on the recommendation of two of my work colleagues. I called mid-afternoon on Saturday to book a table for that evening; they couldn't accommodate my 8pm request but 8:30 was no problem.

When we arrived at about 8:20 we were shown straight to our table, which was super. Menus and the wine list followed quickly, and the choice of wine was good. We picked a Pinot Noir and it swiftly arrived. The food menu wasn't particularly extensive, but I like that: I find it very tedious wading through three dozen options on a big menu, and it leads to indecision anyway.

Our starters (ribs for me and lentil patties for my wife) were excellent, and the ribs in particular were almost big enough for a main course. For my main I chose the day's special, the "surf and turf", and Mrs C went for the spinach and chick pea curry. Both came with a big plate of rice; my dish arrived in a medium-sized bowl of what looked like gravy in terms of colour but which was of course a spicy sauce; you could see a big prawn and a piece of beef peeking above the surface. In fact working one's way through the dish was a voyage of discovery: under that sauce was a seemingly endless collection of prawns and beef, and just when you thought you'd fished out the last piece, another trawl would pick up another bit. It was great, actually: the longer the meat was in the sauce the spicier the pieces were when you'd pulled them out, so the heat increased gradually over time. We didn't do pud because, quite frankly, we didn't have room.

One of the nice things about the place is the common-sense approach on the part of the waiting staff. There doesn't seem to be a concept of a waiter/waitress "owning" a table: whenever we looked like we wanted something, the next staff member who came by would come over to help us. Really nice idea, and it made for fast service (for instance the time between thinking "Should we have another bottle of wine?" and the item in question arriving was less than a minute). They've clearly thought about the whole "customer experience" thing, actually: when we paid the waitress made sure to hand us a take-away menu and mention that they don't deliver but you can order then collect.

The only slightly tedious thing was waiting for food to arrive, which I felt was a longer than average wait. But to be fair the place was absolutely full, and the feeling I got was that it was taking longer than usual simply due to the volume of people eating. Anyway, when it did arrive it was super so who can grumble. And who cared, we had the whole evening to fill and we weren't short of wine while we waited.

So: excellent food, two bottles of decent wine, and we went home full for less than £75 between us. One really can't complain at that.
