I woke up this morning and decided the thing that annoyed me the most about this christmas was not having a christmas dinner. I thought long and hard and weighed up all my options. In my case it's not just nipping out to the nearest bar or restaurant which undoubtedly start their Xmas menus in November, no this was a bit more complicated. Firstly I had to get up at 6.00 AM and race down to the harbour terminal to get on the boat to take me to Jersey. The French don't really do Xmas like the British so my only way of getting some turkey and stuffing was an international crusade on one of the busiest shopping days in the pouring rain. I tried four different places who shall remain nameless for the purpose of this article but let's just say that when I finally found Halkett's I was more than ready for what was to follow. I went for the £19.99 three course menu, choosing a prawn starter which came freshly served with mayonnaise and lemon. The other choices were soup or duck Paté. The main course for me was turkey, ham, chipolata, stuffing, gravy, roast potaoes, and vegetables. It was wonderful. I hasten to add that I was by myself and the restaurant was fully booked but manager went out of his way to get me a table in the bar. The owner and his wife both came to chat and were extremely friendly and welcoming. The other dishes looked very good as well and I rounded off my meal with their traditional chrismas pudding with custard accompanied by a coffee with brandy. I will be coming back here on my next visit and look forward to trying their a la carte menu. Well done and have a Very Happy Xmas. You all deserve it.
